Lock Cylinder Non-Functional

WARNING: VEHICLE SENSOR ORIENTATION IS CRITICAL FOR PROPER SYSTEM OPERATION. IF A VEHICLE EQUIPPED WITH AN AIR BAG SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM (SRS) IS INVOLVED IN A COLLISION, INSPECT THE SENSOR MOUNTING BRACKET AND WIRING PIGTAIL FOR DEFORMATION. REPLACE AND PROPERLY POSITION THE SENSOR OR ANY OTHER DAMAGED SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM (SRS) COMPONENTS WHETHER OR NOT THE AIR BAG IS DEPLOYED.
WARNING: TO AVOID ACCIDENTAL DEPLOYMENT AND POSSIBLE PERSONAL INJURY, THE BACKUP POWER SUPPLY MUST BE DEPLETED BEFORE REPAIRING OR REPLACING ANY FRONT OR SIDE AIR BAG SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM (SRS) COMPONENTS AND BEFORE SERVICING, REPLACING, ADJUSTING OR STRIKING COMPONENTS NEAR THE FRONT OR SIDE AIR BAG SENSORS, SUCH AS DOORS, INSTRUMENT PANEL, CONSOLE, DOOR LATCHES, STRIKERS, SEATS AND HOOD LATCHES. PLEASE REFER TO THE APPROPRIATE LOCATION OF THE FRONT AIR BAG SENSORS. THE SIDE AIR BAG SENSORS ARE LOCATED AT OR NEAR THE BASE OF THE B-PILLAR. TO DEPLETE THE BACKUP POWER SUPPLY ENERGY, DISCONNECT THE BATTERY GROUND CABLE AND WAIT AT LEAST ONE MINUTE. BE SURE TO DISCONNECT AUXILIARY BATTERIES AND POWER SUPPLIES (IF EQUIPPED).
1. NOTE: The following procedure applies to vehicles in which the ignition switch lock cylinder is inoperative and the ignition switch lock cylinder cannot be rotated due to a lost or broken lock cylinder key, unknown key number or an ignition switch lock cylinder cap that has been damaged or broken to the extent that the key cannot be rotated. Disconnect battery ground cable and wait at least one minute.
2. Remove steering wheel.
3. Using locking-type pliers, twist ignition switch lock cylinder cap or bezel until it separates from ignition switch lock cylinder
4. Using a 9.5 mm (3/8-inch) diameter drill, drill down middle of key slot approximately 44 mm (1-3/4 inch) until ignition switch lock cylinder breaks loose from breakaway base of ignition switch lock cylinder Remove ignition switch lock cylinder and drill shavings from steering column lock cylinder housing
5. Remove bearing retainer, steering column lock housing bearing and steering column lock gear. Thoroughly clean all drill shavings and other foreign materials from casting.
6. Carefully inspect steering column lock cylinder housing for damage from the above operation. If damage is apparent, steering column lock cylinder housing must be replaced

1. Replace steering column lock cylinder housing if damaged.
2. Install steering column lock gear, steering column lock housing bearing and bearing retainer into steering column lock cylinder housing.
3. Install new ignition switch lock cylinder.
4. Install steering wheel.
5. Check ignition switch lock cylinder operation.
