Attachment III - Technical Information

OVERVIEW
This procedure is for the replacement of the transaxle rear lubrication tube, and one (1) bracket. It will be necessary to partially drain the transaxle and remove the bottom fluid pan. The gasket for the pan is reusable unless it is torn or damaged.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

1. Raise the vehicle.

2. Remove all but two (2) end bolts from the transaxle bottom fluid pan, then lower the opposite end of the pan to drain the fluid.

3. Remove the two remaining bolts from the transaxle bottom fluid pan, then remove the pan and gasket.

4. Remove the fluid filter and seal assembly with a twisting motion. See Figure 1.

^ If the seal remains on the fluid filter, proceed to step 7.

^ If the seal remains in the transaxle case bore, perform steps 5 and 6.

CAUTION:
Do not use a screwdriver or any other tool that could damage the seal or the transaxle case bore.

5. Use the drive end of a 3/8-inch socket wrench extension to walk the fluid filter seal out of the transaxle case bore. See Figure 2.

6. Install the fluid filter seal onto the filter with the notched end of the seal seated against the shoulder of the filter outlet. See Figure 3.

NOTE:
Only the front bracket will be reused.

7. Remove the two (2) rear lubrication tube brackets. Discard the rear bracket and bolts. See Figure 4.

8. Slide the rear lubrication tube out of the transaxle case and discard the tube. See Figure 4.

CAUTION:
The stub tube on the new rear lubrication tube must be centered in the transaxle case bore during installation to avoid damaging the radial seal inside the case.

9. Slide the new rear lubrication tube into the transaxle case. See Figure 5.

10. Install the rear lubrication tube brackets as follows. See Figure 6.

^ Loosely install the original front bracket. Do not tighten at this time.

CAUTION:
The rear bracket bolt hole is slotted so the bracket can be adjusted to cradle the rear lubrication tube.

^ Install the new rear bracket and bolts, allowing the bracket to cradle the rear lubrication tube.

^ Tighten the new rear bracket to 10 Nm (89 lb-in), then tighten the front bracket to 10 Nm (89 lb-in).

11. Install the fluid filter and seal assembly.

NOTE:
The pan gasket is reusable if it is not torn or damaged.

12. Clean and inspect the bottom fluid pan and gasket.

13. Install the pan gasket and the bottom fluid pan. Tighten the bolts to 12 Nm (107 lb-in).

14. Lower the vehicle.

CAUTION:
Use of any fluid other than specified or overfilling could result in transaxle malfunction or failure.

15. Refill the transaxle as follows.

^ Fill the transaxle with three (3) quarts of MERCON(R) V Multi-Purpose Automatic Transmission Fluid XT-5-QM.

^ Start the engine and cycle the transaxle through all of the gear ranges.

^ Allow the transaxle to reach operating temperature, then check and top off the transaxle fluid.
