ISSUE

Some vehicles not equipped with side airbags may exhibit a condition where the Airbag Warning Lamp is illuminated with Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCS) U2017 and/or U2018. This may be caused by the Airbag Control Module defaulting to a vehicle configuration with side airbags. These codes are unwarranted and will not affect proper restraint system function.

ACTION

Verify Airbag Warning Lamp illumination and DTCs U2017 and/or U2018. Replace Airbag Control Module using new module (YS8Z-14B321-BA) with a default configuration of a vehicle without side airbags. Refer to the following Service Procedure for details.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

NOTE:
REFER TO THE APPROPRIATE MODEL YEAR COUGAR WORKSHOP MANUAL FOR AIRBAG CAUTIONS AND MODULE REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS.

1. Verify Airbag Warning Lamp illumination and DTCs U2017 and/or U2018.

2. Verify vehicle is not equipped with side airbags.

3. Replace the existing Airbag Control Module with the revised service part. Refer to the appropriate model year Cougar Workshop Manual, Section 501-20B for the removal and installation procedure.
