Differential
Special Tools:
Disassembly
1. Install the special tools.
1 Install the thrust element.
2 Insert the tapered insert.
3 Attach the basic tool.
2. Pull the taper roller bearings off the differential.
1 Install the half shells of the insert (Part No. 44802 of the special tool).
2 Attach the half shells (Part No. 44797 of the special tool) to the basic tool.
3. Using the special tool, preload the bearing and remove it.
4. Repeat sub-operations to for the other taper roller bearing.
5. Remove the speedometer drive gear/speedometer trigger wheel.
- Speedometer drive gear (2.5L engine)
- Speedometer trigger wheel (2.0L engine)
6. Remove the gear.
- Remove the bolts.
- Disconnect the gear by lightly tapping.
Assembly
1. NOTE: Do not oil taper roller bearings which are to be used again. New taper roller bearings can be installed without any treatment.
Carefully clean and check all parts and lubricate them with MERCON (R) Multi-Purpose Automatic Transmission Fluid XT-2-QDX meeting MERCON (R) specification plus 2% Friction Modifier C8AZ-19B546-A meeting Ford specification EST-M2C1 18-A. MERCON(R) Automatic Transmission Fluid is being replaced by MERCON(R) V as a service fluid, as per TSB 06-14-4.
2. Install the gear.
- Tighten the bolts, working diagonally.
3. NOTE: The speedometer-drive gear (2.5L engine)-speedometer trigger wheel (2.0L engine) must engage in the housing recess.
Install the speedometer drive gear/speedometer trigger wheel and the taper roller bearing.
1 Install the speedometer drive gear/speedometer trigger wheel.
2 Using the special tools, install the taper roller bearing.
