SPECIAL SERVICE TOOL(S)

WARNING:
^ ALWAYS WEAR SAFETY GLASSES WHEN REPAIRING AN AIR BAG SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM (SRS) VEHICLE AND WHEN HANDLING AN AIR BAG MODULE.THIS WILL REDUCE THE RISK OF INJURY IN THE EVENT OF AN ACCIDENTAL DEPLOYMENT.
^ AFTER DEPLOYMENT, THE AIR BAG SURFACE CAN CONTAIN DEPOSITS OF SODIUM HYDROXIDE, A PRODUCT OF THE GAS GENERANT COMBUSTION THAT IS IRRITATING TO THE SKIN.WASH YOUR HANDS WITH SOAP AND WATER AFTERWARD.
^ NEVER PROBE THE CONNECTORS ON THE AIR BAG MODULE. DOING SO CAN RESULT IN AIR BAG DEPLOYMENT, WHICH CAN RESULT IN PERSONAL INJURY.
^ VEHICLE SENSOR ORIENTATION IS CRITICAL FOR PROPER SYSTEM OPERATION. IF A VEHICLE EQUIPPED WITH AN AIR BAG SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM (SRS) IS INVOLVED IN A COLLISION, INSPECT THE SENSOR MOUNTING BRACKET AND WIRING PIGTAIL FOR DEFORMATION. REPLACE AND PROPERLY POSITION THE SENSOR OR ANY OTHER DAMAGED SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM (SRS) COMPONENTS WHETHER OR NOT THE AIR BAG IS DEPLOYED.
^ TO AVOID ACCIDENTAL DEPLOYMENT AND POSSIBLE PERSONAL INJURY, THE BACKUP POWER SUPPLY MUST BE DEPLETED BEFORE REPAIRING OR REPLACING ANY FRONT OR SIDE AIR BAG SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM (SRS) COMPONENTS AND BEFORE SERVICING, REPLACING, ADJUSTING OR STRIKING COMPONENTS NEAR THE FRONT OR SIDE AIR BAG SENSORS, SUCH AS DOORS, INSTRUMENT PANEL, CONSOLE, DOOR LATCHES, STRIKERS, SEATS AND HOOD LATCHES.
PLEASE REFER TO THE APPROPRIATE VEHICLE SHOP MANUAL TO DETERMINE LOCATION OF THE FRONT AIR BAG SENSORS. THE SIDE AIR BAG SENSORS ARE LOCATED AT OR NEAR THE BASE OF THE B-PILLAR.
TO DEPLETE THE BACKUP POWER SUPPLY ENERGY, DISCONNECT THE BATTERY GROUND CABLE AND WAIT AT LEAST ONE MINUTE. BE SURE TO DISCONNECT AUXILIARY BATTERIES AND POWER SUPPLIES (IF EQUIPPED).
^ THE RESTRAINT SYSTEM DIAGNOSTIC TOOL IS FOR RESTRAINT SYSTEM SERVICE ONLY. REMOVE FROM VEHICLE PRIOR TO ROAD USE. FAILURE TO REMOVE COULD RESULT IN INJURY AND POSSIBLE VIOLATION OF VEHICLE SAFETY STANDARDS.

NOTE:
^ If a seat equipped with a seat mounted side airbag and/or a safety belt pretensioner (if equipped) system is being serviced the airbag system must be deactivated per the deactivation procedure contained in Air Bag Systems of the appropriate car/truck service manual.
^ Airbag simulators (restraint system diagnostic tools) MUST be installed under the seats in the side airbag and safety belt pretensioner (if equipped) to floor connectors.
^ Diagnostics or repairs are not to be performed on a side airbag system and/or safety belt pretensioner (if equipped) with the seats in the vehicle.Prior to attempting to diagnose/repair the side airbag system and/or safety belt pretensioner (if equipped) the seats must be removed from the vehicle and the restraint system diagnostic tools must be installed in the side airbag and the safety belt pretensioner (if equipped) connectors at the floor connectors. The restraint system diagnostic tools must be removed prior to operating the vehicle over the road.
^ Diagnostics may be performed on seat systems other than the side airbag or the safety belt pretensioner (if equipped) system (lumbar, climate controlled, heated, power seat track) with the seat installed in the vehicle as long as the restraint system diagnostic tools are installed under the seats in the side airbag and safety belt pretensioner to floor connectors.
^ After diagnosing/repairing a seat system, the restraint system diagnostic tools must be removed before operating the vehicle over the road.

REMOVAL
1. Disconnect the battery ground cable and wait at least one minute. For additional information, refer to Battery.
2. Move the front seats to their rearmost position.







3. Disconnect the driver seat side air bag (if equipped) and ten-pin electrical connectors.
4. Attach the diagnostic tool(s) to the driver seat electrical connector(s).
1 Attach a driver safety belt pretensioner restraint system diagnostic tool to the ten-pin floor electrical connector.
2 Attach a restraint system diagnostic tool to the driver seat side air bag floor electrical connector (if equipped).

NOTE: The restraint system diagnostic tools for the driver and passenger safety belt pretensioners are similar but not interchangeable. Make sure to install the correct tool in the correct connector.







5. Disconnect the passenger seat side air bag (if equipped) and ten-pin electrical connectors.
6. Attach the diagnostic tool(s) to the passenger seat electrical connector(s).
1 Attach a passenger safety belt pretensioner restraint system diagnostic tool to the ten-pin floor electrical connector.
2 Attach a side air bag restraint system diagnostic tool to the passenger seat side air bag floor electrical connector (if equipped).

NOTE: The restraint system diagnostic tools for the driver and passenger safety belt pretensioners are similar but not interchangeable. Make sure to install the correct tool in the correct connector.







7. Remove the seat front bolt trim covers.

NOTE: Driver seat is shown, passenger seat is similar.







8. Remove the seat front bolts.

NOTE: Driver seat is shown, passenger seat is similar.

9. Position the seat forward.







10. Remove the seat rear nut trim covers.

NOTE: Driver seat is shown, passenger seat is similar.







11. Remove the seat rear nuts.

NOTE: Driver seat is shown, passenger seat is similar.

12. Remove the seat from the vehicle.







13. Remove the lower steering column opening cover with reinforcement.
1 Remove the retaining bolts.
2 Pull out to release the retaining clips and remove the lower steering column opening cover with reinforcement.







14. Disconnect the four-pin air bag sliding contact electrical connector at the base of the steering column.







15. Attach a restraint system diagnostic tool to the vehicle harness side of the four-pin air bag sliding contact electrical connector.
16. Remove the passenger air bag. For additional information, refer to Air Bag Systems.







17. Attach a restraint system diagnostic tool to the vehicle harness side of the passenger air bag electrical connector.
18. Reconnect the battery ground cable. For additional information, refer to Battery.
19. Prove out the supplemental air bag system. For additional information, refer to Air Bag Systems.
20. Disconnect the battery ground cable and wait at least one minute. For additional information, refer to Battery.
21. Remove the seat backrest. For additional information, refer to Front Seat Backrest-Passenger Side.







22. Remove the bolts.
23. Remove the seat track.

INSTALLATION







1. Position the seat track and install the bolts.
2. Install the seat backrest. For additional information, refer to Front Seat Backrest-Driver Side or Front Seat Backrest-Passenger Side.
3. Remove the diagnostic tool(s) from the passenger seat electrical connector(s).
1 Remove the passenger safety belt pretensioner restraint system diagnostic tool from the ten-pin floor electrical connector.
2 Remove the restraint system diagnostic tool from the passenger seat side air bag floor electrical connector (if equipped).

4. Position the seat into the vehicle.







5. Connect the passenger seat side air bag electrical connector (if equipped) and ten-pin electrical connector.







6. Install the seat rear nuts.

7. Install the seat rear trim covers.

NOTE: Driver seat shown, passenger seat similar.

8. Connect the battery ground cable. For additional information, refer to Battery.
9. With the restraint system diagnostic tools still in place, prove out the air bag system.
10. Disconnect the battery ground cable and wait at least one minute. For additional information, refer to Battery.
11. Position the seat to its rearmost position.







12. Install the seat front bolts.

13. Install the seat front trim covers.

NOTE: Driver seat shown, passenger seat similar.

14. Remove the diagnostic tool(s) from the driver seat electrical connector(s).
1 Remove the driver safety belt pretensioner restraint system diagnostic tool from the ten-pin floor electrical connector.
2 Remove the restraint system diagnostic tool from the driver seat side air bag floor electrical connector (if equipped).

15. Connect the driver seat side air bag electrical connector (if equipped) and ten-pin electrical connector.







16. Remove the restraint system diagnostic tool from the vehicle harness side of the four-pin air bag sliding contact electrical connector.

17. Connect the four-pin air bag sliding contact electrical connector at the base of the steering column.







18. Install the lower steering column opening cover with reinforcement.
1 Position the lower steering column opening cover with reinforcement to the instrument panel and push in at the top seating the retaining clips.
2 Install the retaining bolts.







19. Remove the restraint system diagnostic tool from the vehicle harness.

20. Install the passenger air bag. For additional information, refer to Air Bag Systems.
21. Connect the battery ground cable. For additional information, refer to Battery.
22. Prove out the air bag system. For additional information, refer to Air Bag Systems.

23. Check the restraint system for correct operation.
