Vehicle Specific Ignition System

The Taurus Duratec vehicle uses a coil-on-plug ignition system. A coil is located on each spark plug, which eliminates the need for a central distributor and secondary ignition wires. Each coil connects directly to the spark plug below it, and is independently operated by the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) based upon current operating conditions and driver demands. Base ignition timing is set at 10 Before Top Dead Center (BTDC) and is not adjustable.

The spark plugs are located in the center of the combustion chamber and are removed and installed through holes in the valve cover. The coils are positioned over the spark plugs and are secured with a bolt that mounts in the top of the valve cover. The coils must be removed prior to valve cover removal.
