The Cougar is equipped with two front and two rear inertia reel, three point lap and diagonal safety belts.

Each of the passenger safety belts are equipped with Automatic Locking Retraction (ALR) to allow the safety belt to be tailored to a child seat.

The front safety belt retractors are housed within the B-pillar adjacent to the front seat. The lower safety belt anchor is attached to the body by a rail which allows the webbing to be moved clear of the door opening when accessing the rear passenger seat. The upper anchor is mounted onto a sliding mount to allow the safety belt to be adjusted to the user. The driver safety belt buckle is also fitted with a switch which illuminates a warning indicator on the instrument panel if the safety belt is not fastened. The rear safety belt retractors are mounted behind the luggage compartment trim panel.
