REMOVAL

Removal
All vehicles
1. General instructions
- The locations of engine mountings and engine support insulators are described looking from the automatic transaxle to the engine.
2. Standard preparatory measures
- Move the selector lever to 0 position.
- Make a note of the radio keycode.
- Make a note of the preset radio stations.
3. Remove the battery tray.





4. Fix the radiator in position on both sides (left-hand side shown).
5. Remove the air cleaner.





6. NOTE: Use an Allen key to prevent the piston rod from turning.

Loosen the suspension strut locknuts five turns on both sides (right-hand side shown).
7. Loosen the wheel nuts on both front wheels.





8. Disconnect the electrical connections.

2 Automatic transaxle control
3 Transmission Range (TR) switch
4 Wiring harness retaining clip





9. Remove the water pump cover.
1 Disconnect the engine coolant hose.
2 Remove the bolts.
3 Remove the water pump cover.





10. NOTE: Starter motor to remain in vehicle temporarily.

Remove the starter motor bolts.





11. Install the special tools.





12. Remove the transaxle rear support insulator bracket.





13. NOTE: Engine ground cable.

Remove the upper bellhousing bolts.





14. Disconnect the selector cable from the transaxle.

15. Raise and support the vehicle.
16. Remove both front wheels.





17. Drain the automatic transmission fluid.
- Place suitable pan under the transaxle.
- Retighten the drain plug.





18. Remove the radiator splash shield.
- Remove the bolts and clips.





19. Remove the right-hand fender splash shields.





20. NOTE: Rotate the bumper bracket forward.

Remove the bumper bracket on both sides from the sub-frame (left-hand side shown).





Vehicles with air conditioning
21. Remove the suction accumulator bracket bolts.





All vehicles
22. Disconnect the Heated Oxygen Sensor (H02S) electrical connector.
- Separate the cable ties.





23. Disconnect the Turbine Shaft Speed (TSS) sensor electrical connector (shown from below).
- Unclip the cable.





24. Disconnect the Output Shaft Speed (OSS) sensor electrical connector.





25. CAUTION: Overbending of the flexible pipe may cause damage resulting in failure.

Remove the flexible pipe from the exhaust manifold.
- Remove the gaskets.





26. Remove the flexible pipe and the TWC continuation.
- Discard the gaskets.





27. CAUTION: Do not damage the boot or the ABS sensor ring.

Disconnect the lower suspension arm ball joints and the stabilizer link rods (right-hand side shown).
- Disconnect the ABS wiring harness bracket from the suspension strut.
28. Raise the automatic transaxle assembly slightly using the transmission jack





29. Remove the engine left-hand support insulator center bolt.





30. Remove the steering gear heat shield.





31. Using the special tool, remove the steering gear (two bolts) and tie it up (left-hand side shown).





32. Disconnect the power steering hoses from the subframe (one nut and two bolts).





33. Remove the steering intermediate shaft from the steering gear.





34. Remove the transaxle cooler line brackets.
- Reposition the suction accumulator (A/C), if equipped.





35. CAUTION: Support the subframe using Rotunda Powertrain Lift. Place a wooden block approximately one meter (40 inches) in length secured to the lift under the subframe.

Remove the sub-frame.





36. Remove the right-hand roll restrictor center bolt.





37. CAUTION: Do not loosen the connector cooler inlet to the transaxle.

Remove the lower transaxle cooling tube.
- Close the hole with suitable stuffing.





38. CAUTION: Do not loosen the connector cooler inlet to the transaxle.

Remove the upper transaxle cooling lines.
- Unclip the transaxle cooling line from hold down.
- Close the hole with a suitable stuffing.





39. CAUTION: To avoid damage to joints and boots, do not bend the inner halfshaft joint by more than 18 degrees, the outer one by more than 4S degrees.

Using the special tools, disconnect the left-hand halfshaft.





40. CAUTION: To avoid damage to joints and boots, do not bend the inner halfshaft joint by more than 18 degrees, the outer one by more than 45 degrees.

Pull out the left-hand halfshaft and tie it up.





41. Remove the right-hand halfshaft and intermediate shaft.
- Secure the right-hand halfshaft out of the way with mechanics wire.





42. NOTE: Discard the nuts.

Remove the torque converter rubber and the four torque converter nuts.
- Remove rubber cover to gain access to the torque converter nuts.
- Rotate the torque converter to gain access to remaining nuts.





43. Remove the vent tube.





44. Install the Hi-Lift transmission jack and C'D4E transaxle adapter.
- Secure with the retaining straps.





45. Remove the lower bellhousing bolts.





46. Remove the front bellhousing bolts.





47. CAUTION: The torque converter is heavy. Install the special tool before lowering the transaxle.

Install the special tool.





48. Lower the transaxle.
