Removal
1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist.
2. Remove the coolant pump bypass tube.
3. Remove the LH exhaust manifold-to-pipe nuts.
4. Remove the coolant pump. Service and Repair
5. Remove the lower intake manifold. Service and Repair
6. Remove the LH camshafts. Service and Repair
7. Using the special tools, lower the engine until it is aligned with the A/C compressor bracket, and finger-tighten the four bolts.
8. Remove the three-bar engine support.
9. Remove the camshaft followers.
10. Remove the hydraulic lash adjusters.
11. Remove the nuts and remove the exhaust manifold.
- Discard the gasket.
12. Remove the cylinder block coolant drain plug.
13. Remove the nut and the oil level indicator tube.
14. NOTE:New cylinder head bolts must be installed. They are torque-to-yield designed and cannot be reused.
Remove the bolts in the sequence shown and remove the cylinder head.
- Discard the gasket and the bolts.
15. NOTE: The straightedge used must be flat within 0.0051 min (0.0002 inch) per foot of tool length.
Support the cylinder head on a bench with the head gasket side up. Inspect all areas of the deck face with a straightedge and feeler gauge. The cylinder head must not have depressions deeper than 0.0254 mm (0.001 inch) across a 38.1 mm (1.5 inch) square area, or scratches more than 0.0254 mm (0.001 inch) deep.
Installation
1. Install the cylinder block coolant drain plug.
2. CAUTION:Do not use metal scrapers, wire brushes, power abrasive discs or other abrasive means to clean the sealing surfaces. These tools cause scratches and gouges which make leak paths. Use a plastic scraping tool to remove all traces of the head gasket.
NOTE:New cylinder head bolts must be installed. They are torque-to-yield designed and cannot be reused.
Position the LH cylinder head, gasket and install the bolts in the sequence shown in six stages.
- Tighten the bolts in six stages.
- Stage 1: Tighten to 40 Nm (30 ft. lbs.).
- Stage 2: Tighten bolts 90 degrees.
- Stage 3: Loosen one full turn.
- Stage 4: Tighten to 40 Nm (30 ft. lbs.).
- Stage 5: Tighten 90 degrees.
- Stage 6: Tighten 90 degrees.
3. Install a new seal on the oil level indicator tube.
4. Install the oil level indicator tube and the nut.
5. Position a new gasket and install the exhaust manifold nuts in the sequence shown.
6. Install the hydraulic lash adjusters.
- Lubricate the hydraulic lash adjusters with clean engine oil.
7. Install the camshaft followers.
- Lubricate the camshaft followers with clean engine oil.
8. Install the three-bar engine support.
9. Remove the four A/C compressor bracket bolts.
10. Using the special tools, raise the engine away from the A/C compressor bracket.
11. Install the LH camshafts. Service and Repair
12. Install the lower intake manifold. Service and Repair
13. Install the coolant pump. Service and Repair
14. Install the LH exhaust manifold-to-pipe nuts.
15. Install the coolant pump bypass tube.
