Disassembly
1. Remove the clamps.
2. Separate the front wheel driveshaft joint boot from the inboard CV joint housing.
3. Check the CV joint grease for contamination by rubbing it between two fingers. Any gritty feeling indicates contamination.
4. Separate the CV joint from the CV joint housing.
5. Remove the tri-lobe insert. Remove the grease from the outer race. Inspect the outer race and the CV joint (tripod assembly) for wear and damage.
6. NOTE: Other than the front wheel driveshaft joint boot, the interconnecting shaft and inboard CV joint housing are not repairable. Install a new assembly if worn/damaged.
To install a new inboard CV joint housing assembly/front wheel driveshaft joint boot, remove the front wheel driveshaft joint (3B413) and boot.
7. Slide the front wheel driveshaft joint boot off of the interconnecting shaft.
Assembly
1. Install the front wheel driveshaft joint boot.
^ Position the boot into the small boot groove.
2. Install the tri-lobe insert.
3. Fill the inboard CV joint housing with 250 grams (5.88 ounces) of grease. Spread any remaining grease evenly inside the front wheel driveshaft joint boot.
^ Use Constant Velocity Joint Grease (High Temp) XG-5 or equivalent meeting Ford specification WSS-MlC258-A1.
4. Install the inboard CV joint housing.
5. NOTE: Remove all excess grease from the CV joint external surface and the front wheel driveshaft joint boot sealing surface.
Seat the front wheel driveshaft joint boot in the inboard CV joint housing boot groove.
6. Using the special toot install the small clamp.
^ Position the special tool on the clamp ear, and tighten the tool through bolt until the tool closes completely.
7. Install the front wheel driveshaft joint boot and the joint.
8. Set the halfshaft assembled length to specification.
1. Measure the assembly length as shown.
2. Push in or pun out on the inner joint as necessary to adjust the halfshaft assembled length to specification.
3. Hold the inner joint to prevent the assembled length from changing, and insert a small flat blade screwdriver between the boot and the joint to equalize the pressure.
9. NOTE: Make sure the front wheel driveshaft joint boot seats in the groove.
Install the clamps as tight as possible by hand.
10. Using the special tool, tighten the clamp.
^ Position the special tool on the clamp ear, and tighten the tool through bolt until the tool doses completely.
11. Move the CV joints through their full range of travel at various angles. The joints must flex, extend and compress smoothly.
