Vehicles Without Side Air Bags

DEACTIVATION

WARNING:
^ ALWAYS WEAR SAFETY GLASSES WHEN REPAIRING AN AIR BAG SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM (SRS) VEHICLE AND WHEN HANDLING - AIR BAG MODULE, SAFETY BELT RETRACTOR PRETENSIONER, OR SAFETY BELT BUCKLE PRETENSIONER. THIS WILL REDUCE THE RISK OF INJURY IN THE EVENT OF AN ACCIDENTAL DEPLOYMENT.
^ AFTER DEPLOYMENT THE AIR BAG SURFACE CAN CONTAIN DEPOSITS OF SODIUM HYDROXIDE, A PRODUCT OF THE GAS GENERANT COMBUSTION THAT IS IRRITATING TO THE SKIN. WASH YOUR HANDS WITH SOAP AND WATER AFTERWARDS.
^ NEVER PROBE THE CONNECTORS ON THE AIR BAG MODULE. DOING SO CAN RESULT IN AIR BAG DEPLOYMENT, WHICH CAN RESULT IN PERSONAL INJURY.
^ THE SAFETY BELT BUCKLE PRETENSIONER AND SAFETY BELT RETRACTOR PRETENSIONER ARE PYROTECHNIC DEVICES. NEVER PROBE A PRETENSIONER ELECTRICAL CONNECTOR. DOING SO COULD RESULT IN PRETENSIONER OR AIR BAG DEPLOYMENT AND COULD RESULT IN PERSONAL INJURY.
^ VEHICLE SENSOR ORIENTATION IS CRITICAL FOR PROPER SYSTEM OPERATION. IF A VEHICLE EQUIPPED WITH AN AIR BAG SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM (SRS) IS INVOLVED IN A COLLISION, INSPECT THE SENSOR MOUNTING BRACKET AND WIRING PIGTAIL FOR DEFORMATION. REPLACE AND PROPERLY POSITION THE SENSOR OR ANY OTHER DAMAGED SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM (SRS) COMPONENTS WHETHER OR NOT THE AIR BAG IS DEPLOYED.
^ THE RESTRAINT SYSTEM DIAGNOSTIC TOOL(S) ARE FOR RESTRAINT SYSTEM SERVICE ONLY. REMOVE FROM VEHICLE PRIOR TO ROAD USE. FAILURE TO REMOVE COULD RESULT IN INJURY AND POSSIBLE VIOLATION OF VEHICLE SAFETY STANDARDS.


NOTE:
^ If a seat equipped with a seat mounted side air bag and/or a safety belt pretensioner (if equipped) system is being serviced, the air bag system must be deactivated. Refer to Air Bag(s) Arming and Disarming.
^ Restraint system diagnostic tools MUST be installed under the seats in the seat side air bag (if equipped) and safety belt pretensioner (if equipped) to floor connectors.
^ Diagnostics or repairs are not to be performed on a seat equipped with a seat side air bag with the seat in the vehicle. Prior to attempting to diagnose or repair a seat concern when equipped with a seat side air bag, the seat must be removed from the vehicle and the restraint system diagnostic tools must be installed in the seat side air bag electrical connectors. The restraint system diagnostic tools must be removed prior to operating the vehicle over the road.
^ After diagnosing or repairing an SRS, the restraint system diagnostic tools must be removed before operating the vehicle over the road.
^ After diagnosing or repairing a seat system, the restraint system diagnostic tools must be removed before operating the vehicle over the road.
^ The SRS must be fully operational and free of faults before releasing the vehicle to the customer.

1. Move and tilt the front seats to their highest and rearmost position.
2. Disconnect the battery ground cable and wait at least one minute.

WARNING: TO AVOID ACCIDENTAL DEPLOYMENT AND POSSIBLE PERSONAL INJURY, THE BACKUP POWER SUPPLY MUST BE DEPLETED BEFORE REPAIRING OR REPLACING ANY FRONT OR SIDE AIR BAG SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM (SRS) COMPONENTS AND BEFORE SERVICING, REPLACING, ADJUSTING OR STRIKING COMPONENTS NEAR THE FRONT OR SIDE AIR BAG SENSORS, SUCH AS DOORS, INSTRUMENT PANEL, CONSOLE, DOOR LATCHES, STRIKERS, SEATS AND HOOD LATCHES.

PLEASE REFER TO THE APPROPRIATE COMPONENT OR SYSTEM TO DETERMINE LOCATION OF THE FRONT AIR BAG SENSORS.

THE SIDE AIR BAG SENSORS ARE LOCATED AT OR NEAR THE BASE OF THE B-PILLAR.

TO DEPLETE THE BACKUP POWER SUPPLY ENERGY, DISCONNECT THE BATTERY GROUND CABLE AND WAIT AT LEAST ONE MINUTE. BE SURE TO DISCONNECT AUXILIARY BATTERIES AND POWER SUPPLIES (IF EQUIPPED).








3. Remove the lower steering column opening cover with reinforcement
1 Remove the bolts.
2 Pull out to release the retaining clips and remove the lower steering column opening cover with reinforcement.







4. Disconnect the four-pin clockspring electrical connector at the base of the steering column.







5. Attach the restraint system diagnostic tool to the vehicle harness side of the four-pin clockspring electrical connector.







6. Open the glove box to its fullest extent by pushing in on the tabs and release the glove compartment.







7. Through the glove box opening, remove the passenger air bag module retaining bolts.







8. Separate the passenger air bag module and trim cover from the Instrument Panel (I/P).
1 Pull the left hand corner of the trim cover away from the I/P.
2 From left to right, slide across the seam between the trim cover and I/P, releasing the trim cover retaining clips.
3 Pull the passenger air bag module and trim cover away from the I/P, but do not remove it.







9. Remove the passenger air bag module and trim cover.
1 Disconnect the passenger air bag module electrical connector.
2 Remove the wire harness pin-type retainer from the passenger air bag module.
3 Remove the passenger air bag module.







10. Attach the restraint system diagnostic tool to the vehicle harness side of the passenger air bag module electrical connector.
11. If the side air bag bridge resistor is removed, an open circuit fault will be generated by the restraints control module (RCM).

If a restraint system diagnostic tool is installed at the side air bag floor connector, a low resistance fault will be generated by the RCM.

CAUTION: Do not deactivate the side air bag module circuit by removing the side air bag bridge resistor from the side air bag floor electrical connector. Refer to Air Bag(s) Arming and Disarming.







12. Release the hook and loop strip and pull the seat cushion trim cover away enough to expose the front passenger safety belt buckle pretensioner electrical connector.







13. Disconnect the front passenger safety belt buckle pretensioner electrical connector.
1 Slide and disengage the front passenger safety belt buckle pretensioner electrical connector locking clip.
2 Push in on the two release tabs and disconnect the front passenger safety belt buckle pretensioner electrical connector.







14. Attach the restraint system diagnostic tool to the seat harness side of the front passenger safety belt buckle pretensioner electrical connector.







15. Release the hook and loop strip and pull the seat cushion trim cover away enough to expose the front driver safety belt buckle pretensioner electrical connector.







16. Disconnect the front driver safety belt buckle pretensioner electrical connector.
1 Slide and disengage the front driver safety belt buckle pretensioner electrical connector locking clip.
2 Push in on the two release tabs and disconnect the front driver safety belt buckle pretensioner electrical connector.







17. Attach the restraint system diagnostic tool to the seat harness side of the front driver safety belt buckle pretensioner electrical connector.
18. Reconnect the battery ground cable.
19. Prove out the supplemental restraint system (SRS). Prove Out Procedure
20. Disconnect the battery ground cable and wait at least one minute.

REACTIVATION

WARNING: TO REDUCE THE RISK OF SERIOUS PERSONAL INJURY, READ AND FOLLOW ALL WARNINGS, CAUTIONS, AND NOTES AT THE BEGINNING OF THE DEACTIVATION PROCEDURE.

1. Disconnect the battery ground cable and wait at least one minute.







2. Remove the restraint system diagnostic tool from the seat harness side of the front driver safety belt buckle pretensioner electrical connector.







3. Connect the front driver safety belt buckle pretensioner electrical connector.
1 Connect the front driver safety belt buckle pretensioner electrical connector.
2 Slide and engage the front driver safety belt buckle pretensioner electrical connector locking clip.







4. Reposition the seat cushion trim cover around the front driver safety belt buckle pretensioner and attach the hook and loop strip.







5. Remove the restraint system diagnostic tool from the seat harness side of the front passenger safety belt buckle pretensioner electrical connector.







6. Connect the front passenger safety belt buckle pretensioner electrical connector.
1 Connect the front passenger safety belt buckle pretensioner electrical connector.
2 Slide and engage the front passenger safety belt buckle pretensioner electrical connector locking clip.







7. Reposition the seat cushion trim cover around the front passenger safety belt buckle pretensioner and attach the hook and loop strip.







8. Remove the restraint system diagnostic tool from the vehicle harness side of the passenger air bag module electrical connector.







9. Make sure there are no foreign objects in the passenger air bag module alignment channels.







10. Remove or position anything out of the way that may be blocking the accessibility to the I/P alignment rails or holes.







11. Connect the passenger air bag module electrical connector.
1 Position the passenger air bag module.
2 Install the wire harness pin-type retainer to the passenger air bag module.
3 Connect the passenger air bag module electrical connector.







12. Position the passenger air bag module alignment channels to the alignment rails of the I/P.







13. Install the passenger air bag module and trim cover into the I/P.
^ Starting at the left hand side of the trim cover, install the upper and lower alignment pins into the I/P.

NOTE: Left hand upper alignment pin shown, left hand lower alignment pin is similar.







14. Working from left to right, install all the trim cover retaining tabs and alignment pins into the I/P.
^ When all channels and tabs are aligned correctly, there will be an even gap around the perimeter of the passenger air bag trim cover.







15. Through the glove box opening, install the passenger air bag module retaining bolts.
16. Close the glove box.







17. Remove the restraint system diagnostic tool from the vehicle harness side of the four-pin clockspring electrical connector at the base of the steering column.







18. Connect the four-pin clockspring electrical connector at the base of the steering column.







19. Install the lower steering column opening cover with reinforcement.
1 Position the lower steering column opening cover with reinforcement to the instrument panel and push in at the top seating the retaining clips.
2 Install the bolts.

20. Reconnect the battery ground cable.
21. With all the restraint system diagnostic tools removed, prove out the supplemental restraint system (SRS). Prove Out Procedure
