POWER LOCK CONCERNS - SERVICE TIP

FORD:
2000-2006 Taurus

MERCURY:
2000-2005 Sable

ISSUE
Some 2000-2006 Taurus and 2000-2005 Sable vehicles may exhibit concerns with power lock operation.

ACTION
The following Service Procedure may be used in place of the diagnostic trouble code (DTC) driven Workshop Manual (WSM) procedure to help diagnose and repair these concerns. Select the correct service procedure based on whether or not at least one (1) door lock actuator is functional.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

NOTE
BEFORE STARTING ANY REPAIR ATTEMPT, MAKE SURE THAT ALL SMART JUNCTION BOX (SJB), GENERIC ELECTRONIC MODULE (GEM), AND CENTRAL JUNCTION BOX (CJB) CONNECTORS ARE FULLY SEATED.

NOTE
BEFORE STARTING THE SERVICE PROCEDURE, ENSURE THE CORRECT LEVEL OF SJB/GEM.CJB IS INSTALLED IN THE VEHICLE.

INSTALLATION OF INCORRECT LEVEL COMPONENTS MAY CAUSE THE DRIVER DOOR LOCK TO BE INOPERATIVE WHEN USING RKE. A STICKER LISTING THE COMPONENT LEVEL (1A, 2B, 3C OR 4D) IS LOCATED ON THE DRIVER SIDE A-PILLAR (EXTERIOR, DOOR HINGE AREA) AND ON THE SJB (2004-2006 MY). VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH 1A OR 2B LEVEL COMPONENTS ARE NOT RKE CAPABLE. VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH 3C OR 4D LEVEL COMPONENTS ARE RKE CAPABLE.

NOTE
IF THE KEY IS IN THE IGNITION SWITCH AND THE DRIVER DOOR IS OPEN, THE INTERIOR LOCK SWITCHES CAN ACTIVATE THE LOCK FUNCTION MOMENTARILY BUT THE LOCK BUTTON WILL CYCLE BACK TO THE UNLOCKED POSITION DUE TO THE "SMART UNLOCK FEATURE". THIS IS NORMAL OPERATION.

SERVICE PROCEDURE - AT LEAST ONE (1) DOOR LOCK ACTUATOR FUNCTIONAL

1. Attempt to operate the power locks for all doors with the interior lock switches and/or the keyfob.

2. Perform the following test to determine whether the non-functional actuator is defective, or if a circuit fault is present:

a. Test non-functional actuators one at a time. For the door lock actuator being tested, back probe one DVOM lead into one side of the two circuits on the harness side of the actuator connector and the other DVOM lead into the other side of the same actuator. With actuator connected, command door lock actuator lock/unlock with interior lock switch, key fob, or via active command with scan tool. Repeat test with red DVOM lead back probed into other actuator circuit.

b. If the DVOM indicates 12V (or battery voltage) in one direction, - 12V (or battery voltage) in the other direction, the GEM/CJB/SJB is NOT defective.

c. If voltage is present in both directions, verify connector and pin fit at the actuator then replace the actuator if no other fault is found.

d. If voltage is not present, recheck between one actuator circuit and chassis ground, then the other actuator circuit and chassis ground while commanding lock/unlock. If voltage is present in at least one direction on either circuit, a potential open circuit is present between the CJB/SJB and actuator.

e. Refer to WSM diagnostic procedures in section, 501-14 following the symptom chart for additional direction in circuit testing.

SERVICE PROCEDURE - ALL DOOR LOCK ACTUATORS INOPERATIVE

1. Verify 20A mini fuse is not open. Check F2.22 for 2000-2003 models, F2.26 for 2004-2006 models. If fuse is open, replace fuse and diagnose as needed.

2. Using a Diagnostic Tool, monitor door lock switch PIDs (NGS PIDs DR_LOCK, DR_UNLOCK and CDR_ULK WDS PIDs DR_LOCK and LKULKSW) while operating trim panel lock/unlock switches. If the lock switch PIDs respond to switch inputs, the inputs to the SJB/GEM are OK. Proceed to Step 3. If the PIDs do not respond to the switch inputs, proceed to Step 2a or 2b based on PID readings.

a. If Step 2 PID readings responded to a "LOCK" input but did not respond to an "UNLOCK" input, ground SJB/GEM Pin 6 (SJB C2280f or GEM C2Olc) using a fused test lead. If the doors unlock when Pin 6 is grounded, check the wiring and the switches. If the doors do not unlock when Pin 6 is grounded, verify connection between the GEM and CJB (2000-2003 MY only), and retry. If doors still do not unlock when Pin 6 is grounded, check Pin 6 to see if it is always shorted to ground and repair if it is. If Pin 6 is not always shorted to ground, then replace the SJB or GEM (2000-2003).

b. If Step 2 PID readings responded to an "UNLOCK' input but did not respond to a "LOCK" input, ground SJB/CJB Pin 18 (SJB C2280f or GEM C201c) using a fused test lead. If the doors lock when Pin 18 is grounded, check the wiring and the switches. If the doors do not lock when Pin 18 is grounded, verify connection between the GEM and CJB (2000-2003 MY only), and retry. If doors still do not lock when Pin 18 is grounded, check Pin 18 to see if it is always shorted to ground and repair if it is. If Pin 18 is not shorted to ground, then replace SJB or GEM (2000-2003).

3. Perform the following test to determine whether the non-functional actuators are defective, or if a circuit fault is present:

Repeat test with red DVOM lead back probed into other actuator circuit.

b. If the DVOM indicates 12V (or battery voltage) in one direction, -12V (or battery voltage) in the other direction, the GEM/CJB/SJB is NOT defective.

c. If voltage is present both directions, verify connector and Pin fit at actuator then replace actuator if no other fault is found.

d. If voltage is not present, re-check between one actuator circuit and chassis ground, then other actuator circuit and chassis ground while commanding lock/unlock. If voltage is present in at least one direction on either circuit, a potential open circuit is present between the CJB/SJB and actuator.

e. Refer to WSM diagnostic procedures in section, 501-14 following the symptom chart for additional direction in circuit and GEM/CJB/SJB testing.
