Seats: Description and Operation
SEATSFront Seats
The front seats can be equipped with the following:
- Six- or 8-way power seats
- Manual seat track
- Manual recline
- Power lumbar
- Seat side air bags
- Heated seats
- Armrests
- Occupant classification sensor (OCS) (passenger seat only)
- Safety belt buckle and belt tension sensor (passenger seat only)
Six- and 8-Way Power Seats
The power seat track moves the seat horizontally, vertically and tilts the front and rear of the seat up and down independently of each other.
The front seat track motors are not repaired separately. If a front seat track motor needs to be repaired, a new seat track must be installed.
The power recliner is a modular design and incorporated into the inertia front seat backrest latch. The individual components cannot be repaired or installed new.
The power recliner tilts the seat backrest backward or forward and is controlled by the seat control switch.
The power recliner cannot be repaired separately. If the power recliner needs to be repaired, the entire front seat backrest latch must be installed new.
Lumbar Support
The optional lumbar support system consists of the following components:
- Lumbar control switch
- Power lumbar assembly
Seat Side Air Bag
Optional driver and passenger seat side air bags are attached to the seat backrest frame.
Front seat backrest trim covers installed on seats with seat side air bags cannot be repaired. New front seat backrest trim covers are to be installed. Cleaning is permissible.
If a seat side air bag deployment took place, a new seat backrest foam pad, trim cover and seat side air bag module must be installed. Install a new seat backrest frame, if necessary.
Heated Seat
NOTE:
- If a passenger seat cushion heater mat is faulty, a new OCS service kit must be installed and a new cushion heater mat must be installed to the OCS service kit foam pad.
- When installing an OCS service kit equipped with heated seats, a new seat cushion heater mat must be installed. Do not re-use the original equipment manufacture (OEM) OCS cushion heater mat. The OCS service kit does not come with a cushion heater mat.
- When installing a new driver seat heater mat (cushion or backrest) or passenger seat backrest heater mat, a new foam pad with the heater mat already attached is required. A new heater mat by itself is not available for service for the driver seat. Each heated seat is controlled by a switch on the door trim panel.
The heated seat system:
- will only operate with the ignition switch in RUN.
- will operate with battery voltage as low as 9 volts.
- will maintain a temperature automatically once it is selected.
- will heat to the selected temperature each time the ignition switch is turned to RUN if the heated seat is not switched OFF.
Occupant Classification Sensor (OCS)
CAUTION: If only installing a new front passenger seat cushion trim cover, the occupant classification sensor must be rezeroed.
NOTE: It is necessary to rezero the OCS system when a front passenger seat cushion is disassembled, a new trim cover installed, or an OCS service kit is installed. A diagnostic tool is used to trigger the active command to carry out rezeroing of the OCS system.
The seat occupant classification sensor system is found only on the front passenger seat. The OCS system components (seat cushion foam pad, bladder with pressure sensor and electronic control unit) are calibrated to each other and are serviced as an assembly. OCS system components are not to be installed separately. If installing a new OCS system, OCS system component or seat cushion foam pad, a new OCS system service kit (seat cushion foam pad, bladder, bladder with pressure sensor and electronic control unit) must be installed as an assembly.
If the OCS needs to be serviced or rezeroed, refer to Air Bag Systems.
Belt Tension Sensor (BTS)
The BTS is part of the safety belt buckle on the front passenger seat only. It is part of the supplemental restraint system (SRS). It connects electrically to the passenger seat wiring harness. For diagnostic information, refer to Air Bag Systems. For specific removal and installation information, refer to Seat Belt Systems.
