FNR5 TRANSMISSION WITH DTC P0706 -
TRANSMISSION RANGE SENSOR CIRCUIT FAILURE
FORD:
2006-2009 Fusion
MERCURY:
2006-2009 Milan
ISSUE
Some 2006-2009 Fusion and Milan vehicles equipped with an FNR5 automatic transmission may exhibit diagnostic trouble code (DTC) P0706 - transmission range (IR) sensor circuit failure, can be caused by a number different things. The IR sensor out of adjustment, the transmission shift cable out of adjustment, loose or corroded connector pins are some of the most common found causes for the diagnostic trouble code (DTC) P0706 to be set intermittently.
ACTION
Follow the Service Tips to correct the condition.
SERVICE TIPS
To diagnose DTC P0706 follow pinpoint test C in the Workshop Manual (WSM), Section 307-01B and refer to theses additional Service Tips.
While following pinpoint test C in the WSM section 307-01B refer to the following:
^ Step C1 states to check the TR sensor adjustment. This can only be done correctly if the transmission manual lever is in the Neutral position and by using the TR sensor alignment Tool 307-571.
^ Step C2 states to check the transmission selector lever cable adjustment and this must be done with the transmission manual lever in Drive position. Step C3, C4 and C5 are checking connectors at TR Sensor and transmission control module (TCM); it is also checking the harness.
^ Within the harness, there is Connector C134 and Ground 102 that need to be inspected for corrosion (Figure 1).
^ Splice S112 can be checked by doing a wiggle test on the harness in the area of the splice. (Figure 2)
^ Step C6 is checking the TR sensor function through resistance reading with an ohmmeter. Before replacing the TCM or TR sensor reconnect all connectors and use IDS to monitor voltage on the TR PID. Voltage will be:
