Removal

CAUTION: During engine repair procedures, cleanliness is extremely important. Any foreign material, including any material created while cleaning gasket surfaces, that enters the oil passages, coolant passages or the oil pan, can cause engine failure.

1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist.
2. Remove the lower intake manifold.
3. Remove the coolant bypass tube.
4. Remove the RH camshafts.

5. CAUTION: The camshaft roller followers must be installed in their original positions.

Remove the camshaft roller followers.

6. CAUTION: The hydraulic lash adjusters must be installed in their original positions.

Remove the hydraulic lash adjusters.
7. Remove the 6 RH exhaust manifold nuts and position the manifold aside.
^ Remove and discard the gasket.
8. Remove the bolt and detach the power steering pressure tube (PSP) bracket.

9. NOTE: New cylinder head bolts must be installed. They are torque-to-yield designed and cannot be reused.

Remove the bolts in the sequence shown.

10. Remove the cylinder head and support the cylinder head on a bench with the head gasket side up.
^ Discard the gasket and the bolts.

11. NOTE: The straightedge used must be flat within 0.0051 mm (0.0002 in) per foot of tool length.

Inspect all areas of the deck face with a straightedge and feeler gauge. The cylinder head must not have depressions deeper than 0.0254 mm (0.0001 in) across a 38.1 mm (1.5 in) square area, or scratches more than 0.0254 mm (0.0001 in).

Installation

1. CAUTION: Do not use metal scrapers, wire brushes, power abrasive discs or other abrasive means to clean the sealing surfaces. These tools cause scratches and gouges which make leak paths.

Use a plastic scraping tool to remove all traces of the head gasket.
^ Clean all surfaces with silicone gasket remover and metal surface prep.
2. Clean the cylinder head bolt holes in the cylinder block. Make sure all coolant, oil or other foreign material is removed.
3. Position the new gasket and the cylinder head.

4. NOTE: New cylinder head bolts must be installed. They are torque-to-yield designed and cannot be reused.

Install the 8 bolts and tighten in 6 stages in the sequence shown.
^ Stage 1: Tighten to 40 Nm (30 lb-ft).
^ Stage 2: Tighten 90 degrees.
^ Stage 3: Loosen 1 full turn.
^ Stage 4: Tighten to 40 Nm (30 lb-ft).
^ Stage 5: Tighten 90 degrees.
^ Stage 6: Tighten 90 degrees.

5. CAUTION: The hydraulic lash adjusters must be installed in their original positions.

Install the hydraulic lash adjusters.
^ Lubricate the hydraulic lash adjusters with clean engine oil.

6. CAUTION: The camshaft roller followers must be installed in their original positions.

Install the camshaft roller followers.
^ Lubricate the camshaft roller followers with clean engine oil.
7. Position a new gasket, the RH exhaust manifold and install the 6 nuts.
^ Tighten to 20 Nm (15 lb-ft).

8. Position the PSP tube bracket and install the bolt.
^ Tighten to 7 Nm (62 lb-in).
9. Install the RH camshafts.
10. Install the coolant bypass tube.
11. Install the lower intake manifold.
