ISSUE
Some 2006-2009 Fusion and Milan vehicles equipped with Electronic Automatic Temperature Control (EATC) and built before 12/16/2008 may exhibit the following after extended cold soak (usually overnight) in extreme cold temperatures below 10 °F (-12.2 °C) a condition where the EATC module remains in the off position after the vehicle has been started and/or not returning to it's prior climate control setting or the EATC module screen may be blank.
If this occurs, the module can be manually turned on and will operate normally. Once the climate control head is activated, all climate control functionality will operate properly. An improved EATC module has been released to correct this condition.
ACTION
Follow the Service Procedure steps to correct the condition.
SERVICE PROCEDURE
NOTE
THE CONDITION IS PRESENT ONLY IN EXTREME COLD TEMPERATURES BELOW 10 °F (-12.2 °C).
The condition occurs only in temperatures below 10 °F (-12.2 °C) and is more apparent to customers with vehicles equipped with remote start.
Zephyr and MKZ vehicles equipped with Dual-Zone Electronic Automatic Temperature Control (DATC), and Fusion and Milan vehicles equipped with Electronic Manual Temperature Control (EMTC) are not affected by this condition and this procedure does not apply.
1. If the vehicle is a 2008-2009, equipped with EATC, and the EATC screen remains blank while the system is powered on per the issue description:
a. Replace the EATC module per Workshop Manual (WSM), Section 412-01.
b. All other vehicles proceed to Step 2.
2. If the vehicle is a 2006-2007, equipped with EATC, and the EATC screen remains blank while the system is powered on per the issue description, perform the following:
a. If the vehicle is a 2006-2007 and has climate control steering wheel switches, proceed to Step 3.
b. If the vehicle is a 2006-2007 and has no steering wheel switches, only replace the EATC head per the WSM Section 412-01.
3. For 2006-2007 model year vehicles equipped with steering wheel switches perform the following:
a. Use IDS to run Programmable Module Installation (PMI) on the EATC. Follow IDS Screens listed below.
b. Replace the EATC Module per the WSM Section 412-01 when IDS indicates to install the new module.
c. When performing this operation use IDS release 62.10 and higher or 63.02 and higher. This new calibration is not included in the VCM 2009.7 DVD. Calibration files may also be obtained at the website.
IDS Screens - PMI
1. ID the vehicle using the service tool.
2. Go to:
a. Toolbox tab
b. Module Programming
C. Programmable Module Installation (PMI)
d. EATC
3. During PMI the service tool will indicate when to replace the EATC and the service tool will program the new module to the correct level to gain functionality of steering wheels fan and temperature switches.
