Body/Frame - Floor Pan Clunk/Grind Noise

CLUNK/GRIND NOISE FROM FLOOR PAN

FORD:
2010-2011 Crown Victoria

MERCURY:
2010-2011 Grand Marquis

ISSUE
Some 2010-2011 Crown Victoria and Grand Marquis vehicles may exhibit a clunk or grind noise from the right hand front floor pan area during heavy braking or when driving on rough roads. This concern may be due to the vehicle body contacting the frame.

ACTION
Follow the Service Procedure steps to correct the condition.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

WARNING
IF EQUIPPED WITH A FIRE SUPPRESSION SYSTEM, THE BACKUP POWER SUPPLY MUST BE DEPLETED BEFORE LIFTING THE VEHICLE. SEE WORKSHOP MANUAL (WSM), SECTION 419-03 FOR DETAILS.





1. Using Chassis Ear J5P97202 or equivalent, attach leads to the right side B body mount area. (Figure 1)

2. Drive vehicle and check for noise during braking or over bumps.

a. If noise is heard, proceed to Step 3.

b. If no noise is heard, do not continue with this article. Refer to WSM, Section 100-04, for normal diagnostics.

3. Remove three (3) pin type retainers and remove the radiator sight shield.

4. Using hand tools, loosen fourteen (14) body mount bolts and the two (2) front body mount nuts. (Only use air tools to complete the removal, as required.)

5. Raise the vehicle body approximately 1 inch (25 mm).





6. Install one (1) flat washer only between the body and the mount at each of the four (4) B body mount locations. Two (2) mounts on each side of the vehicle. (Figure 2)

7. Lower vehicle body.

NOTE
THE USE OF AIR TOOLS TO INSTALL BODY BOLTS CAN CAUSE DAMAGE TO BODY BOLT NUTS.

8. Install fourteen (14) body mount bolts and the two (2) front body mount nuts.

9. Torque front body support mount nuts (location A) to 41 lb-ft (55 N.m).

10. Torque all remaining body support mount bolts to 35 lb-ft (48 N.m).

11. Install three (3) pin type retainers and install the radiator sight shield.
