SUBJECT
Hood Grille is Loose or Rattles
MODEL
MINI Cooper, Cooper S
SITUATION
If the hood grille is removed and reinstalled as part of a repair, the self threading nuts used in production cannot be tightened completely, and the grill may be noticeably loose, causing a rattle.
CAUSE
Once the self threading nuts have cut into the studs on the grille, they cannot get enough of a bite on the studs if they are removed and reinstalled.
CORRECTION
If a hood grill is removed and is to be reinstalled, run an M5 die onto the studs prior to installation to cut threads onto the studs. Use new nuts, p/n 07 13 0 778 878, along with the original equipment plastic washers, and tighten to 1 Nm.
