SI M61 04 03

June 2003
Service Engineering

PERFORM THE PROCEDURE OUTLINED IN THIS SERVICE INFORMATION ON ALL AFFECTED VEHICLES BEFORE CUSTOMER DELIVERY OR THE NEXT TIME THEY ARE IN THE SHOP FOR MAINTENANCE OR REPAIRS.

SUBJECT
Service Action: Diode Retrofit Harness for Electric Power Steering Pump Fan

MODEL
Cooper with W10 from 12/01/2002 up to 05/19/2003

Cooper S with W11 from 12/01/2002 up to 05/19/2003

SITUATION

The low-voltage parasitic current may be generated by the auxiliary fan for power steering pump (EHPAS) when engine is turned off. This voltage, back-feeding through the ignition loop, is causing an implausible brake light switch diagnosis and an erroneous fault entry stored in EMS2K.

Multiple brake light switch fault entries will result in the following conditions:

^ On Cooper vehicles with CVT transmission, the EP (emergency program) is permanently displayed in instrument cluster, although drivability is not impaired and transmission functions correctly.

^ On vehicles equipped with cruise control, its functionality is inoperative.

^ On all vehicles, fault code P0571 (Brake light switch - Signal plausibility) is stored in EMS2K, and fault code FC2O (KL15 On; KL30 Off-Signal plausibility) is stored in Instrument Cluster.

AFFECTED VEHICLES

This Service Action involves Cooper vehicles with W10 engines, and Cooper S vehicles with W11 engine which were produced from 12/01/2002 up to 05/19/2003.

In order to determine if a specific vehicle is affected by this Service Action, it will be necessary to utilize the "Service Menu" of the DCS (Dealer Communication System). Based on the response of the system, either proceed with the corrective action or take no further action.

The Chassis Number Ranges listed are only for informational purposes and are not to be considered as the only deciding factor.

CORRECTION

On the affected vehicles install diode adapter harness (PN 61 11 6 940 432) at the power steering pump auxiliary fan circuit.

Clear BMS2K and Kombi fault memories.

PROCEDURE

1. Remove the auxiliary fan for power steering pump (BHPAS). For removal instruction refer to RA32 41 070 found in BMW TIS.

2. Install adapter harness and secure it with two wire ties as shown on the illustration at points 1 and 2.

3. Before the auxiliary fan is reinstalled in the vehicle, make sure that wiring harness is not protruding beyond the retaining plate. If needed, push harness wiring underneath connector (as shown on the illustration)

4. Reinstall auxiliary fan using two new M8 self-locking nuts (PN 31 33 0 141 304). Torque the self-locking nuts to 19 Nm.

5. Using DISPlus/GT1 perform "Quick delete" to clear FMS2K and Kombi (Instrument Cluster) fault memories.

LABEL INSTRUCTIONS

This Service Action has been assigned code number 8. After the vehicle has been checked, and corrected if necessary, obtain a label (MD 20-013) and:

a. emboss your dealer warranty number in the middle of the label (1);

b. punch out code number 8 printed on the label and,

c. affix the label to the B pillar as shown.

If the vehicle already has a label from a previous Service Action/Recall Campaign, affix the new label next to the old one. Do not affix one label on top of another one because a number from an underlying label could appear in the punched-out hole of the new label.
