Shift Linkage: Service and Repair

Removing And Installing Gear Shift Housing
Special Tools Required:
^ 23 4 010

Remove shift lever dust cover.

Remove rear exhaust.

R50 and R53:





Remove front heat shield fixings (1).
Front heat shield fixings 2 - 3 Nm





Remove center heat shield fixings (1).
Intermediate heat shield fixings 2 - 3 Nm





Release shift lever cables from floor supports.

Remove shift lever housing retaining bolts (1).

Lower shift lever housing (2).

R50 only:





Remove battery box.

Remove clips from gearshift cable housing locations (1) and release gearshift cables (2) from ball joints.

Release cables (3) from housing (4).

Remove housing and cables from vehicle.

R53 only:





Remove air filter box.

Release gearshift cables (1) from ball joints with special tool 23 4 010

Release and remove gearshift cables from abutment bracket (2)

R50 and R53:





Release clips from shift lever cover.

Note: Care should be taken not to damage the gearshift housing cover, when removing gearshift cables and cable retaining clips.





Using a suitable pair of pliers, release cables (1).

Remove cable retaining clips (2) and remove cables from gearshift housing.
