Removal and Replacement


Replacing Fuel Tank

Special tools required:
- 34 6 310

Caution!
After installation of fuel tank and prior to first engine start up:
Check electrical resistance between grounding lead (fuel tank filler pipe) and wheel hub.
Measured value: approximately 0.6 ohms.
Fill fuel tank with at least 5 liters of fuel.



Drain fuel tank.
Remove exhaust system.
Remove exhaust heat shield.

R53 only:
Release rear half of battery main cable.
Remove center console.

R50 and R53:
Remove console mounting.
Release handbrake cables from rear caliper.
Remove rear seat.
Remove access panels.
Remove left rear wheel arch.
Release fuel connector and harness connection.






Disconnect handbrake cables from handbrake lever and remove from body using special tool 34 6 310.

Install hint: Adjust handbrake.






Release clip (1) and disconnect fuel filler hose from tank.
Tightening torque 2.5 - 3.5 Nm.
Disconnect breather pipe from fuel filler neck.
Support tank over a wide area with a lifter.






Remove bolts (1) securing tank to subframe and body.
Tightening torque 6 Nm.






Lower fuel tank and disconnect right vent line (1) from tank.
Pull left vent pipe through body.
Remove tank.

Install hint: Ensure pipes and harness are clear of obstructions when refitting.
