PERFORM THE PROCEDURE OUTLINED IN THIS SERVICE INFORMATION ON ALL AFFECTED VEHICLES THE NEXT TIME THEY ARE IN THE SHOP FOR MAINTENANCE OR REPAIRS.

Under the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act of 1966, as amended, if there has been a recall campaign, dealers must assure that all new vehicles and new items of replacement equipment are free of safety defects and comply with all applicable Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards at the time of delivery to the consumer. This means that dealers may not deliver new motor vehicles or new items of replacement equipment to consumers unless the safety defect or noncompliance has been remedied before delivery.

Recall Campaign 04V-348: Flat Tire Monitor

MODEL
R50 (Cooper), R53 (Cooper S)

SITUATION
This recall involves the flat tire monitoring system. Although the Owner's Manual states that in the event of a flat tire, an audible signal will sound and an indicator lamp will flash, an audible signal will not sound and an indicator lamp will not flash. However, the system will still detect a flat tire and, when detected, will illuminate the indicator lamp.

To minimize customer's inconvenience caused by this Recall Campaign, you may pick-up (and deliver after repair) from the customer's home, or provide appropriate alternative transportation.

Customers will be impressed when you return their vehicles cleaned inside and out and with a full tank of gas. Reimbursement information for the vehicle fueling and valet costs can be found in the Warranty section of this bulletin.

AFFECTED VEHICLES

This Recall Campaign involves Cooper and Cooper S vehicles which were produced from 23 March 2004 through 15 April 2004.

In order to determine if a specific vehicle is affected by this Recall Campaign, it will be necessary to utilize the "Service Menu" of the DCS (Dealer Communication System). Based on the response of the system, either proceed with the corrective action or take no further action.





The Chassis Number Ranges listed below are only for informational purposes and are not to be considered as the only deciding factor.

CORRECTION

The repair will consist of recoding the instrument cluster and installing a label in the vehicle1s Owner's Manual. Recoding the instrument cluster will restore the audible warning. The label containing the proper description of the system function must be installed in the Owner's Manual.

Each dealer will be sent 10 labels. Additional labels may be ordered under MD20035.

PROCEDURE

Obtain the vehicle's Owner's Manual. Open the Owner's manual to page 63 and install the label over the original text on the left side of the page.

Recode the instrument cluster using the GT-l loaded with CD38 or higher following the procedure listed below.

1. Connect the diagnostic head to the vehicle and switch the ignition to KL 15.

2. After identifying the vehicle, select the "Change" button at the top of the "Diagnostic Vehicle identification" screen.

3. Select "Coding/Program."

4. Select "3 ZCS/FA CODWO".

5. The tester screen will display the coding version. Press the right arrow button.

6. Follow the on screen prompts and press the right arrow button.

7. Select "10 Ser. R50/R52/R53" and press the right arrow button.

8. Select "1 Recoding" and press the right arrow button.

9. Select "10 KOMBI" and press the right arrow button.

10. "KOMBI has been selected. Selection correct?" Select "Yes".

11. Select "2 Recode control unit" and press the right arrow button.

12. Follow the on screen prompts and press the right arrow button.

13. "Should KOMBI be assigned be assigned rigidly to the car?" Select "Yes".

14. "Chassis number Change?" Select "No".

15. The GM SA and VN will be displayed with the option to "Change?" Select "No".

16. "Start automatic coding?" Select "Yes".

17. Follow the on screen prompts to complete the coding.

LABEL INSTRUCTIONS

This Recall Campaign has been assigned code number 13. After the vehicle has been checked, and corrected if necessary, obtain a label (MD20-013) and:

a. emboss your MINI dealer warranty number in the middle of the label (1);

b. punch out code number 13 (2) printed on the label and,





c. affix the label to the B pillar as shown.

If the vehicle already has a label from a previous Service Action/Recall Campaign, affix the new label next to the old one. Do not affix one label on top of another one because a number from an underlying label could appear in the punched-out hole of the new label.
