SUBJECT
Service Action: Convertible Top Adjustment
MODEL
R52 (Cooper Convertible & Cooper S Convertible)
SITUATION
A special tool kit (83 30 0 495 333) and adjustment procedure has been developed to prevent white marks from forming on the convertible top fabric. The convertible top on vehicles produced before 3/25/2005 needs to be adjusted using this adjustment tool kit.
CAUSE
The convertible top sits too low when in the stowed position. This causes the weight of the convertible top frame to rest on the fabric. The weight and tension of the frame mechanisms on the fabric, combined with the movement of the convertible top when driving over bumps, create the white wear marks.
AFFECTED VEHICLES
This Service Action involves Cooper and Cooper S Convertible vehicles produced up to 03/25/2005.
In order to determine if a specific vehicle is affected by this Service Action, it will be necessary to utilize the "Service Menu" of the DCS (Dealer Communication System). Based on the response of the system, either proceed with the corrective action or take no further action.
The Chassis Number Ranges shown are only for informational purposes and are not to be considered as the only deciding factor.
CORRECTION
To prevent the white marks from forming, adjust the stowed position of the convertible top using the special tool kit (P/N 83 30 0 495 333).
PROCEDURE
Note:
If the customer is complaining about the white marks and the vehicle was produced prior to 2/1/2005, ensure that the repair procedures in SI M54 01 05 have been carried out. If that procedure has not been performed, proceed as follows:
1. Perform the procedure in SI M54 01 05 and claim for those repairs using the warranty information provided in that SI.
2. Install the Service Action label (see "Label Instructions") for the repair procedure in this SI (code number 23), and claim for the repair using Work Package # 2 (see Warranty Information section of this SI).
If SI M54 01 05 has been performed in the past, then follow the adjustment procedure outlined in this bulletin (SI M54 06 05) only.
Note:
For illustration purposes, the following procedure is only shown on the driver's side of the vehicle. This procedure must also be performed on the passenger's side of the vehicle.
Open the trunk loading assistance portion of the convertible top. Measure the dimension (A1) between the top edge of the end stop (1) and the top edge of the metal support bracket (3) using a Vernier caliper or a ruler.
Note:
Do not undo lock nut (2) at this time.
Lower the convertible top to the halfway open position to gain access to the rear window seal. Remove the top screw (1) then slide the window seal (2) downwards to remove it from the seal carrier (3).
Note:
Do not remove the seal carrier (3).
Completely lower the convertible top into the stowed position. Fit special tool 54 3 191 onto the drivers side seal carrier and special tool 54 3 192 onto the passenger's side seal carrier. Insert locking pin (1) of the special tool into the screw head of the second screw (2) from the rear of the vehicle.
Make sure the special tool is fully seated by trying to move it from side to side. The special tool must not move in the seal carrier. The special tool should make full contact with contact points (1) on the seal carrier.
If checking stop (1) makes contact with the window cavity cover strip, it is necessary to check height h2 of the locator pin (2) in relationship to the seal carrier.
If locator pin (2) is not in contact with the seal carrier, the soft top is adjusted too low.
Measure dimension h2 between locator pin (2) and seal carrier using a feeler gauge or ruler.
If checking stop (1) is not in contact with the window cavity strip, the soft top is adjusted too high. Measure dimension h1 between checking stop (1) and the window cavity cover strip using a feeler gauge or ruler.
Note:
The ideal adjustment is achieved when the locator pin (2) is in contact with the seal carrier and checking stop (1) is in contact with the window cavity strip.
Tolerance + 0.5 mm
Raise the convertible top to gain access to the set screw.
Fit special tool 54 3 193 onto the lock nut of the set screw (1) and loosen. To determine the adjustment dimension, multiply the measured dimension h1 or h2 by 1.5.
1.5 = thread ratio of the set screw. Example: Measured height of h1 or h2 = 2 mm.
2 mm x 1.50= 3 turns of the set screw in the relevant direction for h1 or h2.
Notes:
The lock nut and set screw may have been secured with thread locker. It is easiest to loosen the lock nut while sitting in the back seat of the vehicle. A 9 mm wrench can be used on the stem of tool 54 3 193 to provide extra torque when loosing.
Vehicles manufactured before March 2005 were fitted with short set screws. Replace both set screws with P/N 54 34 7 180 309 if the desired h1 and h2 dimensions cannot be obtained. Perform the following if the set screws need to be repaced:
Turn set screw onto the support bracket and adjust to achieve the approximate dimension of A1 previously noted. Then make the necessary adjustments to achieve the correct dimension for h1 and h2.
Repeat the adjustment procedures on both sides of the vehicle until h1 and h2 dimensions are within the tolerance range of = 0.5 mm. Perform a functional check of the convertible top.

LABEL INSTRUCTIONS
This Service Action has been assigned code number 23. After the vehicle has been checked, and corrected if necessary, obtain a label (MD 20 - 036) and:
a. emboss your MINI dealer warranty number in the middle of the label (1);
b. punch out code number 23 (2) printed on the label and,
c. affix the label to the B pillar as shown.
If the vehicle already has a label from a previous Service Action/Recall Campaign, affix the new label next to the old one. Do not affix one label on top of another one because a number from an underlying label could appear in the punched-out hole of the new label.
WARRANTY INFORMATION
Reimbursement for this Service Action will be via Campaign Entry.
