Removing and Installing/Replacing Right Drive Shaft

31 60 004 - Removing and installing/replacing right drive shaft





Special tools required:
- 24 8 120 24 8 120 Rubber Profile
- 32 1 190 32 1 090 Removal Tool
- 32 3 090 32 3 090 Extractor





Necessary preliminary tasks:
- Remove wheel Removing or Installing Front or Rear Wheel
- Remove wheel speed sensor Replacing One Front Pulse Generator
- If necessary, remove fan for power steering Removing and Installing/Replacing Fan for Power Steering
- Drain transmission oil
After completing work, top up transmission oil.





Release collar nut (1), press brake pedal to floor for this purpose.

Installation:
Replace collar nut.
Tightening torque, 31 60 2AZ [1][2]Differential Assembly.

Important!
Secure collar nut after tightening down on flattened area of drive shaft by peening.





Release screws (1) and remove brake caliper.
Tie back brake caliper.

Installation:
Tightening torque, 34 11 2AZ 34 11 Front Brake.





Release nut and detach tie rod end with special tool 32 3 090 32 3 090 Extractor (1).

Installation:
Replace self-locking nut.
Tightening torque, 32 21 1AZ [1][2]Specifications.





Release nut and use special tool 32 1 190 32 1 090 Removal Tool to detach control arm from steering knuckle.

Installation:
Replace self-locking nut.
Tightening torque, 31 12 1AZ Control Arms and Struts (Front).





Release screws (1).
Tightening torque, 31 60 1AZ [1][2]Differential Assembly.





Release screw and remove steering knuckle from spring strut.

Installation:
Tightening torque, 31 21 1AZ Front Axle.

Important!
Support steering knuckle.

Lift out drive shaft with steering knuckle and remove drive shaft from steering knuckle.





Installation:
Replace shaft seal in transmission.
Position special tool 24 8 120 24 8 120 Rubber Profile on shaft seal as shown.
Make sure the tool fits over the sealing ring lip so that the sealing ring is protected when the drive shaft is inserted.
Make sure the tool is properly guided over the sealing ring lip.

Important!
The assembly guard from the shaft seal repair kit must be used on Getrag transmissions.





Installation:
Insert drive shaft in seal as illustrated and remove special tool 24 8 120 24 8 120 Rubber Profile by pulling handle.
Slide drive shaft into gearbox up to stop.
Add transmission oil and check for leaks.
