Removing And Installing Left Or Right Rear Side Window
Special tools required:
- 51 3 010
CAUTION!
The 'Instructions for window cementing' are an essential part of these repair instructions and must be followed without fail.
Cover ALL side window adjacent panels and trim with protective covers.
Exterior component removal:
Remove rear side window lower finisher.
Remove rear side window front finisher.
Remove rear side window rear finisher.
Remove roof panel side finisher.
Vehicles fitted with TV:
Disconnect aerial connector from rear side window.
Tape back connectors to C post trim (risk of damage).
CAUTION!
When re-using the side window:
If necessary, tape off all antenna wires on side window with fabric adhesive tape (risk of damage).
Apply tape (e.g. Tesa) to the body panel edges around the side window to prevent paint damage during window removal.
Apply tape (e.g. Tesa) to interior trim panel edges around side window aperture.
Cutting adhesive bead - Front and Rear edge:
For cutting through the adhesive bead along the front and rear edge, fit a 36 mm blade to tool.
NOTE: Sharpen knife blade before every use on a running machine with a grinding stone (even with new knife blade).
Carefully insert knife between body and side window.
Guide handle of knife parallel to side window.
Cut through front and rear edge adhesive bead, keeping the blade as close as possible to the side window glass.
Cutting adhesive bead - Top and Bottom edge:
Using a glazing cutting wire tool (1) (as shown), thread the wire (2) (using pliers) through the adhesive bead along the front edge.
When the wire appears inside, attach the tool handle (3) to the wire and (with a second person) cut through the upper and lower adhesive beads.
NOTE: Some tools may vary. Set up tool following the tool manufacturers instruction.
CAUTION!
In the final stages of cutting, the second person (outside) must grip special tool 51 3 010.
Remove side window with special tool 51 3 010.
CAUTION!
To provide long-term corrosion inhibition, any damage to paintwork (scratches and large areas of damage) should always be touched up.
Immediately before installing rear side window:
Remove residual adhesive from body flange and if necessary on window down to a thickness of approx. 0.5 mm.
To avoid damage to paintwork on body flange, carefully remove residual adhesive with a heavy-duty scalpel (1).
CAUTION!
Clean freshly cut residual adhesive with spirit only, do not under any circumstances use Sika bonding agent 205/5.
Install hint:
Remove rest of dual-lock tapes (1) and clean bonding area.
Stick new dual-lock tapes (1) onto body areas (as shown).
Dual-lock tapes on side window MUST match the dual-lock tapes on body.
CAUTION!
There are four height buffers (2) fitted to the side window body flange, enure these buffers are not damaged, if they are damaged replace.
Height buffer replacement:
Remove damaged buffer(s).
Clean area with a degreasing agent.
Fit new buffer(s) (2) as shown.
Cut nozzle to size.
(A) 7 ± 1 mm
(B) 11 (-2) mm
NOTE: To apply uniform glue bead, use cartridge pistol, operated with compressed air or electric power.
Note expiration date of glue!
Overview for side window cementing:
Attach special tool 51 3 010 to tool trolley. Moisten suction surfaces and secure side window.
When re-using old side window, remove residual adhesive to 0.5 mm.
Remove rest of dual-lock tapes (4).
Clean bonding area and stick on new dual-lock tapes (4).
Almost vertical part (B) of adhesive bead (2) must face window edge.
CAUTION!
Prior to fitting side window, ensure both the tailgate and front door are fully closed and the door glass is fully raised.
Position side window with special tool 51 3 010.
Align side window (1) to door glass rear edge (2) and tailgate glass edge (3).
Ensure there is approximately a 6 mm gap between lower edge of side window and body (A) as shown, and snap side window into dual-lock tapes.
NOTE:
Adhesive area for plastic adhesive tape must be of grease and dirt.
Fix side window in position with yellow plastic adhesive tape (sourcing reference: BMW Parts Service).
