Convertible Top: Service and Repair






54 34 101 Removing And Installing Complete Electro-Hydraulic Soft Top

Special tools required:







Necessary preliminary tasks:
- Remove rear side trim panels
- Remove luggage compartment wheel arch panels
- Remove panel for parcel shelf
- Remove panel for rear lid







IMPORTANT:
- Risk of damage.
- Open loading aid and tape off working area with adhesive tape (1) and cover rear end of car.







Push on all cable holder covers (1) along hydraulic lines.







Unclip hydraulic lines.

Installation:
If necessary, replace faulty clips.

Hydraulic lines must not be kinked or transposed.







Unfasten plug connection (2) and disconnect.

Unclip cable holders.

Remove guide pin (1).







Left side:
Release screws of hydraulic unit (1).

Tightening torque 54 34 6AZ.







Unlock all plug connections and disconnect.







Unlock plug connection (1) from Convertible top module (CVM) and disconnect.







Detach locking clip (1).

Detach soft top fabric (loose fabric) from pins.







Release screw (1).

Installation:
Insert screw (1) with Loctite.

Tightening torque 54 34 12AZ.

IMPORTANT: Risk of damage to piston rod of hydraulic cylinder when tool (1) is attached.

NOTE: Screw is not accessible when soft top is stowed.







Raise soft top by guide rails slightly.

Carefully insert tool (1) into body opening.

Release screw.

Tightening torque 54 34 1AZ.







Unscrew nuts (1).

Tightening torque 54 34 1AZ.







Owner's handbook for lifting gear must be observed.

IMPORTANT: Use lifting gear and assembly carrier only in conjunction with BMW WJN.10 workshop crane (special lifting arm with 1690 mm arm length - refer to BMW Workshop Equipment Catalogue) or a crane with comparable specifications.







Prepare jack for removal of soft top.

Special tool consists of:
- 54 3 240 = Lifting gear
- 54 3 250 Adapter with chain and hook
- 54 3 260 Adapter with counterholder
- 54 3 280 Fixture for brace

Position lifting gear over convertible top.

1 Suspend hook in main bearing.
2 Fit shaped piece on main bearing.

Carefully tension lifting gear and check again that shaped piece and hook are correctly seated in main bearing.







NOTE:
- Carry out this part of the work with the assistance of two other persons.
- For purposes of clarity, this work step is shown without the lifting gear.
1. Raise Convertible top slightly and pull main bearing off threaded pin towards rear.
2. Raise Convertible top by main bearing evenly.
3. Carefully swivel Convertible top at main bearing out of body. At the same time, raise and remove tension bar and hydraulic unit.

Mount soft top if necessary on special tool - soft top mount.







Installation:
Carry out function check.

Check gap dimensions.







Removing bow bearing:

Before removing tension bar bearing, mark position of bearing in relation to body.

When installing, align bearing to markings.







Unscrew nuts.

Tightening torque 54 34 4AZ.

Installation:
Check gap dimensions.

If necessary, adjust spacing for soft top longitudinal and vertical alignment.







Retaining plate, soft top:
Before removing Convertible top with retaining plate, mark position of main bearing in relation to body.
When installing Convertible top, align main bearing with retaining plate to markings.







Remove window cavity cover strip.

Release screws (1) and remove connecting bracket (2).

Tightening torque 51 37 04AZ.







Release screw (1).

Feed out Convertible top retaining plate upwards between power window unit and side member.

Installation:
Check gap dimensions.

If necessary, adjust distance for soft top longitudinal alignment.

Tighten screw (1).
