Central Head Unit and Multimedia Platform
Central Head Unit And Multimedia Platform
Central Head unit and Multimedia Platform (CHAMP)
The Central Headunit and Multimedia Platform (CHAMP) is used as a head unit. The 2nd generation of the CHAMP is a further development.
The CHAMP is the head unit in the MOST network. The CHAMP of the 2nd generation is functionally identical to the basic version of the Car Information Computer (CIC).
The main changes to the CHAMP are:
- No entertainment server
- The navigation has many additional functions compared to the Car Communication Computer (CCC). Examples of this are night vision and perspective vision.
- It does not have a hard disk like the CIC, but has a memory card instead
- Integrate of the following former control units as functions in the head unit:
- Digital tuner (DAB)
- Digital tuner US (IBOC)
- Satellite car radio (SDARS)
- Integrated telephone function (depending on optional equipment)
Brief component description
The following components are described:
- CHAMP
- Central Information Display with LVDS interface
- MINI joystick
- USB connection
CHAMP
There are 2 versions of CHAMP: with and without navigation system.
In principle, the structure of the CHAMP corresponds to that of a personal computer. In a similar way to a PC, the CHAMP contains:
- Processor
- Main memory
- Other peripherals
The following applications are stored on the memory card (16 GB with navigation system):
- Navigation software (application software)
- Navigation (map data)
- Voice processing system
- Contacts (database of names and addresses)
The head unit is connected to the diagnosis connector via Ethernet. This means that in service mode, map data for the navigation system can be loaded via the ISTA/P programming system as standard.
Because of the extended functionality, the connections on the rear of the CHAMP have changed.
Central Information Display with LVDS interface
A Central Information Display (CID) that has undergone further development is used as the display instrument for the CHAMP. The screen diagonal is still 6.5". The picture signal is now transmitted using a two-wire connection. The resolution has increased to 800 x 480 pixels.
The graphical layout of the user interface has been redesigned. 8 selection menus are now available rather than 3. When one of the selection menus is selected, the text of the selection menu appears in the centre of the circle: e.g. MINI Connected
The main menu is divided into the following 8 selection menus:
- CD and Multimedia
- Radio
- Telephone
- Navigation
- Office
- MINI Connected
- Vehicle information
- Settings
With the CHAMP, the LVDS data line is a two-wire connection. This new LVDS data line has the following advantages:
- Higher data transfer rate
- No difference in the signal runtime between the individual lines
- Simpler and lower-cost technology
A four-wire, screened cable is used for the two-wire connection. This solution involves lower costs, even though one of the 4 lines is not used actively.
To prevent EMC faults, the unused line is also earthed. The capacitive disruptive influences of the signals are diverted to earth. Furthermore, earthed lines form a defined potential and cannot have the same effect as aerials.
MINI joystick
The MINI joystick is the central operating element for all menus on the Central Information Display. The MINI joystick is in the centre console behind the gearshift lever and the selector lever (with automatic gearbox). There are two buttons in front of the MINI joystick:
- "Home" button
Calling up the main menu
- "Browse" button
Browses through the last 3 menus opened
The MINI joystick is connected via the K-CAN with the headunit. The signal for the locator lighting (terminal 58g e.g. for the buttons) is transferred on the bus.
USB connection
The USB connection in the glove compartment is only present if the vehicle is equipped with a navigation system. In this case a Combox is always installed if the telephone function is available.
There is a USB port in the glove box. This can be used to update the map data for the navigation system. The CHAMP does not have a DVD drive.
NOTE: No import is possible via the USB audio interface.
It is not possible to import such data via the USB audio interface on the centre console. This interface is still only intended for playback of external audio sources.
USB sticks with the standard USB 1.1 are supported. However, the standard USB 2.0 (= high speed) is recommended.
If the USB stick has been partitioned, the files must be located on the first partition. This is the only way these files are recognised and used. The USB interface supplies the USB stick with a maximum of 500 mA.
USB hard disks, USB hubs and USB memory card readers with a number of bays cannot be read at the USB interface.
System functions
The following system functions are described:
- Functional networking
- Functional enhancements of the CHAMP
- Integrated telephone function
- Personalisation of settings
Functional networking
Functional enhancements of the CHAMP
Combining several devices that were previously external in one housing has resulted in the following benefits:
- Additional functionality
- Software is easy to extend using suitable interfaces
- Fewer plug-in connections, therefore fewer fault sources
- Optimised installation room and lighter weight
The CHAMP has a modular design The most important systems for communication are integrated in the CHAMP as modules. The CHAMP combines the following components in one housing:
- Navigation computer, HIP module and rate sensor
- Tuner (FM)
- Tuner (AM)
- DAB tuner (L band and band III)
- IBOC decoder (US only)
- SDARS satellite tuner (US only)
- Audio system controller
- MOST-CAN gateway
- Interface to Central Information Display (LVDS)
The CD drive is suitable for playing CDs (digital audio). Both the MP3, WMA and AAC formats (m3a, m3p from iTunes) are supported.
Integrated telephone function
Depending on the configuration of the vehicle, the telephone function is integrated in the head unit. In this case, no separate telephone control unit is installed. The telephone function that is integrated in the head unit is only possible in vehicles without a navigation system.
The procedure for Bluetooth pairing of the mobile phone can be found in the owner's handbook. Pay attention to separate functional description for the integrated telephone function.
Personalisation of settings
For BMW vehicles, the personalisation of functions is known as a Personal Profile. Here, individual settings are stored in the vehicle on a key-dependent basis. The settings are called up again on unlocking the vehicle.
The CHAMP also supports Mobile Profile.
With mobile profile the personal profile of the user can be transmitted via the following interfaces:
- External USB memory
- Online via the BMW Portal
Subsequently, the Personal Profile can be imported into another BMW vehicle.
The Car Access System (CAS) is the master control unit for the personalisation.
Notes for Service department
Diagnosis instructions
NOTE: Observe the service function.
A service function in the diagnosis system can be used to reset the settings of the Personal Profile.
Path: Service function > Body > Head unit > Restore delivery status
If "noticeable symptoms" is selected, a fault pattern catalogue is available.
Programming information
The following interfaces are used to program the CHAMP:
- Ethernet via diagnosis connector: navigation map data
- MOST port residual information such as application software
