SUBJECT
Erroneous "Service due" Message Though Brake Lining Thickness Sufficient

MODEL
R55 Produced from 8/10 through 10/12

R56 Produced from 8/10 through 10/12

R57 Produced from 8/10 through 10/12

R58 Produced from 8/10 through 10/12

R59 Produced from 8/10 through 10/12

R60 Produced from SOP through 10/12

All vehicles with single-level brake pad wear sensor listed above

SITUATION
The CBS data calculated for the remaining distance of the front and/or rear brake pads does not agree with the actual brake pad thickness.

The yellow brake lining service due indicator illuminates even though the pad thickness is greater than the minimum wear limit (approximately 3.7 mm); the brake wear sensor has not yet been activated (from a thickness of approx. 4.2 mm).

In some cases, the red warning message may already be active.

CAUSE
The CBS front/rear brake display is based on a mathematical calculation. Various influences are incorporated into this calculation (for example, vehicle speed, brake pressure, and rotor temperature). Due to changing driving characteristics and/or unfavorable environmental conditions, the calculated remaining distance may differ from actual pad thickness.

CORRECTION
Run diagnostics with ISTA/D. Work through the corresponding test modules and then program and code the vehicle with ISTA/P P2.48.0 or a more recent version.

Caution:
Programming deletes the correction factor.

Check the remaining brake pad thickness using special tool 34 1 260.

If the brake wear sensor has not yet been activated (pad thickness greater than 4.2 mm), the mathematical calculation must be adjusted by correcting the pad thickness.

WARRANTY INFORMATION

Covered under the terms of the BMW New Vehicle/SAV Limited Warranty or the BMW Certified Pre-Owned Program.

Labor operation code 00 00 006 is a Main labor operation. If you are using a Main labor code for another repair, use the Plus code labor operation 00 00 556 instead.

Refer to KSD2 for the corresponding flat rate unit (FRU) allowance. Enter the Chassis Number, which consists of the last 7 digits of the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN). Click on the "Search" button, and then enter the applicable flat rate labor operation in the FR code field.

Even though work time labor operation code 34 99 000 ends in "000," it is not considered a Main labor operation.

If a control module fails to program correctly or initializations are required, the additional work must be claimed with separate labor operations under the applicable defect code listed above; refer to KSD2.

Other Repairs

If performing other ISTA diagnostics and the related test plans results with eligible and covered work, claim this work with the applicable defect code and labor operations listed in KSD2.

Note:
Please follow any TeileClearing (TC) or Diagcode (DC) requirements that may apply to this additional work.
