Cylinder Head Assembly: Service and Repair
1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
2. Drain engine coolant, then remove air cleaner and breather hoses.
3. Disconnect accelerator cable, then remove A/C compressor drive belt.

4. Rotate crankshaft in normal direction of rotation until piston of cylinder No. 1 is at TDC of compression stroke with crankshaft and camshaft timing marks aligned, Fig. 1.
5. Disconnect coil cable, then mark distributor cap and housing to facilitate installation and remove distributor.
6. Remove rocker cover attaching bolts, then the rocker cover.

7. Remove camshaft sprocket attaching bolt, then the cylinder head attaching bolts in sequence shown, Fig. 2.
8. Remove cylinder head, then the gasket.

9. Reverse procedure to install. Referring to bolt tightening sequence, Fig. 3, torque cylinder head bolts in three steps as follows:
a. Torque all bolts except No. 11 to 69 ft. lbs. on a cold engine or 75 ft. lbs. on a hot engine.
b. Torque cylinder head to chain case cover bolts (No. 11) to 156 inch lbs.
