Engine: Service and Repair
The engine and transmission must be removed as an assembly.1. Relieve fuel pressure in the system, then disconnect battery ground cable.
2. Drain engine coolant and transmission fluid.
3. Engine compartment is located under the front seats. Remove seat underframe as follows:
a. Slide driver's seat forward.
b. Remove cover behind driver's seat.
c. Remove passenger seat clamp, then lift seat and hold up with strap.
d. Remove seat and position seat underframe aside.
4. Working from above vehicle, remove radiator fan shroud.
5. Remove power steering oil pump assembly.
6. Remove cooling fan and disconnect radiator hoses.
7. Disconnect engine control and oxygen sensor harness connectors.
8. Disconnect accelerator cable and, on models equipped with automatic transmission, detent cable.
9. Disconnect engine and brake vacuum hoses.
10. Remove A/C drive belt, then remove A/C compressor, if equipped.
11. Disconnect engine ground strap.
12. Raise and support vehicle. Proceed from underneath vehicle and remove strut bars.
13. Disconnect remaining harness connectors.
14. Disconnect exhaust pipes from engine.
15. Disconnect transmission cooler hoses. Cap hoses to prevent dirt from entering lines.
16. Disconnect fuel and heater hoses.
17. Disconnect transmission control cable. Do not bend the transmission end of control cable by more than 8°.
18. Remove propeller shaft.
19. Remove rear engine mounting installation bolt, then remove engine mounting to crossmember bolt and nuts.
20. Remove engine and transmission assembly from vehicle.
21. Separate engine and transmission as follows:
a. Remove starter motor.
b. Remove bellhousing cover.
c. Remove driveplate to torque converter bolts.
d. Remove transmission attaching bolts, noting length and position for installation, then remove transmission assembly.
22. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Torque driveplate to torque converter bolts to 25-30 ft. lbs.
b. Torque engine to transmission 10mm bolts to 31-40 ft. lbs., 8mm bolts to 14-20 ft. lbs.
c. Torque starter motor bolts to 20-25 ft. lbs.
d. Tighten propeller shaft bolts to specifications.
e. Torque engine mount to crossmember bolts to 54-69 ft. lbs.
f. Tighten rear engine mount bolt to specifications.
g. Tighten fuel supply hose connection to specifications.
h. Tighten front exhaust pipe to exhaust manifold bolts to specifications.
i. Torque strut bar to engine nuts to 65-90 ft. lbs., strut bar to frame bolts to specifications.
