Initial Inspection and Diagnostic Overview

Use these steps to plan your diagnostic strategy. If you follow them carefully, you will be sure that you have exhausted most of the possible ways to find an anti-theft system fault.
1. Gather information from the customer.
2. Verify that the condition described by the customer exists.
3. Confirm the malfunction is eliminated.

DIAGNOSIS

NOTE: After the power supply to the radio and tape player has been interrupted for one hour or more, the anti-theft system will prevent the radio and tape player from working, even if the power supply is restored. Problems with the anti-theft system can be found using the flow chart.

NOTE: *: Tape player displays "code" or "OFF," CD player displays "CODE" or "OFF".

STEP 1. When the ignition key is in the "ACC" or "ON" position and the power button is pressed, does "code" or "CODE"* appear on the display?
If yes, go to Step 2.

If no, check and repair the connector or harness.

STEP 2. Can the anti-theft code be input to the display using the memory select buttons?
If yes, go to Step 3.

If no, repair or replace the radio and tape player.

STEP 3. If the tape player button is pressed after anti-theft code has been input, does the radio and tape player work then?
If yes, the anti-theft system is normal.

If no, go to Step 4.

STEP 4. Does the unit beep, then display "1 Err" for about two seconds, and then change to "code" or "CODE?"* (caused by a faulty anti-theft code input)
If yes, go to Step 5.

If no, repair or replace the radio and tape player.

STEP 5. If the tape player button is pressed after the anti-theft code has been input again (the second time), does the radio and tape player then work?
If yes, the anti-theft system is normal (an incorrect code was input the first time.)

If no, go to Step 6.

STEP 6 Does the unit beep, then display "2 Err" for about two seconds, and then change to "code" or "CODE?"* (caused by a faulty anti-theft code input)
If yes, go to Step 7.

If no, repair or replace the radio and tape player.

STEP 7. If the tape player button is pressed after the anti-theft code has been input again (the third time), does the radio and tape player then work?

If yes, the anti-theft system is normal (an incorrect code has been input at the second time.)

If no, go to Step 8.

STEP 8. Does the unit beep, then display "3 Err" for about five seconds, and then change to "oFF" or "OFF?"* (caused by a faulty anti-theft code input)
If yes, go to Step 9.

If no, repair or replace the radio and tape player.

STEP 9. If the anti-theft code fails to be input continuously three times or more, only the power button will turn ON and OFF, but other buttons won't function.
To input the anti-theft code again, turn the ignition switch to the "ACC" or "ON" position and wait for one hour. After "oFF" or "OFF"* disappears on the display and changes into "code" or "CODE," the anti-theft code can be input again.
