Operation CHARM: Car repair manuals for everyone.

Inspection Procedure 2

CIRCUIT OPERATION
- The ETACS-ECU monitors the ignition switch by detecting voltage from the ignition switch.
- The ETACS-ECU judges that the driver's side door is opened or closed by detecting voltage from the front door switch (LH).
- The ETACS-ECU judges that the ignition key is inserted or removed by detecting voltage from the key reminder switch.
- When the driver's door is opened (door switch ON), the ignition key hole illumination light will illuminate. When the driver's door is closed (door switch OFF), the ignition key hole illumination light will go out within 15 seconds.

TECHNICAL DESCRIPTION (COMMENT)
The cause is probably a short circuit in the harness or a defective ETACS-ECU.

TROUBLESHOOTING HINTS
- Damaged harness wire
- malfunction of the ETACS-ECU

DIAGNOSIS
Required Special Tool:
MB991502: Scan Tool (MUT-II)

STEP 1. Check the input signal from the driver's side door switch.

CAUTION: To prevent damage to the scan tool MB991502, make sure the ignition switch is "OFF" before connecting or disconnecting the scan tool MB991502.

1. Connect scan tool MB991502, to the data link connector.
2. Check that the tone alarm of the scan tool MB991502 sounds when the driver's side door is opened.
If the tone alarm of the scan tool MB991502 does not sound, the signal from the driver's side door switch is suspected to be defective. Go to Step 2.

If the tone alarm of the scan tool MB991502 sounds when the driver's side door is opened [front door switch (LH) is turned ON], the signal from the driver's side door switch is normal. Replace the ETACS-ECU. Check that the malfunction is eliminated.

STEP 2. Check the driver's side door switch.
1. Remove the driver's side door switch. Refer to Door.

2. Check the continuity of the driver's side door switch.
If the driver's side door switch is in good condition, go to Step 3.

If the driver's side door switch is defective, replace the driver's side door switch. Check that the malfunction is eliminated.

STEP 3. Check the driver's side door switch ground circuit system.

Check the continuity between the driver's side door switch body (metal section) and ground.
- There should be continuity (0 ohm)

If continuity, go to Step 4.

If no continuity, repair the wire or switch. Check that the malfunction is eliminated.

STEP 4. Check the input signal from the driver's side door switch.
1. Disconnect driver's side door switch connector E-33 and measure at the harness side.

2. Measure the voltage between terminal number 2 and ground.
- Voltage should be approximately 5 volts.

If approximately 5 volts, check that the malfunction is eliminated.

If not approximately 5 volts, go to Step 5.

STEP 5. Check driver's side door switch connector E-33 for damage.
If harness connector E-33 is damaged, repair or replace it. Refer to Harness Connector Inspection.

If harness connector E-33 is in good condition, check that the malfunction is eliminated.

STEP 6. Check the harness wires between the driver's side door switch connector E-33 and ETACS-ECU connector D-11.
If the harness wires between the driver's side door switch connector E-33 and ETACS-ECU connector D-11 are damaged, repair them. Check that the malfunction is eliminated.

If the harness wires are in good condition, replace the ETACS-ECU. Check that the malfunction is eliminated.

NOTE: After inspecting the junction block connector D-14 and intermediate connector E-42, inspect the wire. If the junction block connector D-14 and intermediate connector E-24 are damaged, repair or replace them. Refer to Harness Connector inspection.
