SUBJECT
NOISE FROM FRONT WHEEL HUB BEARING

PURPOSE

This bulletin contains information about improvements to the front wheel hub bearing for certain 2001-03 Montero vehicles.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION

Symptom

While driving, customers may notice a noise from the front wheel bearing(s).

Cause

This bearing noise may be caused by excessive bearing wear because of water penetration into the bearing.

Remedy

If you identify this condition, replace the hub and bearing assembly along with the castle nut with parts supplied in a new front wheel hub/bearing assembly kit.

AFFECTED VEHICLES
2001-03 Montero built before 1/7/2003

Vehicles built after the above date have the new hub/bearing assembly and castle nut installed at the factory.

PROCEDURE

Refer to service manual Group 26 for hub & bearing replacement procedures.

When installing the new hub assembly, make sure the castle nut is tightened to the new torque value (200 +/- 10 Nm [147.5 +/- 7 ft-lb]). The new-style castle nut is modified with a friction coefficient stabilizer and has a green color on its surface.

CAUTION:
The modified castle nut, washer, and lock pin cannot be re-used once the nut has been tightened
