Inspection Procedure 7: Electric steering lock does not become locked. (At power supply mode OFF)
TECHNICAL DESCRIPTION (COMMENT)
The electric steering lock performs the locking operation by using the opening/closing of the door (ON/OFF of door switch) as a trigger. If the electric steering lock is not unlocked, the door switch circuit system or the electric steering lock may have a problem.
TROUBLESHOOTING HINTS
- Malfunction of OSS-ECU
- Malfunction of the door switch
- Electric steering lock malfunction
- Damaged harness wires and connectors
DIAGNOSIS
STEP 1. Using scan tool MB991958, read the diagnostic trouble code

CAUTION:
To prevent damage to scan tool (MB991958), always turn the power supply mode of the engine switch to the OFF position before connecting or disconnecting scan tool (MB991958).
Connect scan tool MB991958. Refer to "How to connect scan tool (M.U.T.-III) Reading and Clearing Diagnostic Trouble Codes."
(2)After performing the forced power supply output (refer to forced power supply output procedure Programming and Relearning) "IG-ON".
(3)Check if the DTC is set to OSS-ECU.
(4)Turn the power supply mode of the engine switch to OFF.
Q. Is the DTC set?
YES Diagnose the OSS. Refer to diagnostic trouble code chart Keyless Operation System (KOS).
NO Go to Step 2.
STEP 2. Using scan tool MB991958, check other system data list.
Check the ETACS-ECU data list.
- Open the each door.
OK: Normal condition are displayed.
Q. Are the check result normal?
YES [Normal conditions are displayed for all the items.] : Go to Step 3.
NO [Normal condition is not displayed for item No. 256.] : Inspection Procedure 6.
NO [Normal condition is not displayed for item No. 257.] : Inspection Procedure 5.
NO [Normal condition is not displayed for item No. 258.] : Inspection Procedure 8.
NO [Normal condition is not displayed for item No. 259.] : Inspection Procedure 7.
STEP 3. Check of the troubles
Check if the electric steering lock becomes locked when the power supply mode is OFF.
Q. Is the check result normal?
YES Intermittent malfunction is suspected How to Cope With Intermittent Malfunctions).
NO Replace the electric steering lock and register the VIN (Refer to Programming and Relearning).
