Component Tests and General Diagnostics

Thermo Sensors

Fig. 21 Testing Double Terminal Thermo Sensors:

1. Drain cooling system, then remove thermo sensors from radiator.
2. Submerge sensor end of thermo sensor as shown in Fig. 21.
3. Connect ohmmeter across thermo sensor terminals.
4. Continuity should exist at approximately 185°F, and no continuity at 172-183°F or less.

Relay Testing

Fig. 22 Relay Terminal Identification. Galant & Mirage:

1. With radiator fan relay disconnected, use suitable ohmmeter to check for continuity between terminals 1 and 2 Fig. 22, continuity should exist. Check between terminals 3 and 4, continuity should not exist.
2. Apply battery positive voltage to terminal 2 and battery negative to terminal 1, then check for continuity between terminals 3 and 4, continuity should exist.
3. If relay does not perform as outlined above, replace.

Radiator Fan Motor

Radiator Fan Motor Terminal Identification. Galant:

Fig. 24 Radiator Fan Motor Terminal Identification. Mirage:

1. Disconnect fan motor connection.
2. Connect battery to terminals as shown in Figs. 23 and 24. Motor should operate smoothly.

Condenser Fan Motor

Fig. 25 Condenser Fan Motor Terminal Identification. Galant:

1. On Galant models, disconnect fan motor connection.
2. Apply battery positive voltage to terminal 2 and battery negative to terminal 4 as shown in Fig. 25. Motor should operate smoothly.

Resistor Rest (Galant)

Fig. 26 Resistor Terminal Identification. Galant:

This test is for all turbo models and non-turbo models with all wheel drive and automatic transmission.
1. Disconnect radiator fan motor connection.
2. Connect ohmmeter between terminals 1 and 6 as shown in Fig. 26.
3. Resistance should be between 0.26-0.32 ohms.
