Positive Crankcase Ventilation: Testing and Inspection

Fig. 7 Testing PCV System:

PCV SYSTEM INSPECTION

1. Disconnect the ventilation hose from the positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) valve. Remove the PCV valve from the rocker cover and then reconnect the ventilation hose to the PCV valve.
2. While the engine is at idle place a finger over the open end of the PCV valve and verify that vacuum is felt. Note that it is possible to feel the internal plunger move when a finger is placed over the end of the valve.
3. If no vacuum is felt clean the PCV hose with a suitable solvent and if necessary replace the PCV valve.
4. When re-installing the PCV valve torque to 8-12 Nm (6-8.5 ft. lbs.)

PCV VALVE INSPECTION

1. Remove the PCV valve.
2. Insert a thin rod from the threaded end of the PCV valve and verify that the valve plunger moves freely.
3. If the valve does not operate freely or is clogged replace it.
