SUBJECT: AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE
GEAR NOISE REDUCTION


PURPOSE

For reduction of gear noise, several modifications have been made to six models of the automatic transaxle. These modifications are included on automatic transaxles produced from June 1, 1991. Automatic transaxles produced before the modification date are only affected when internal components must be replaced.

This technical service bulletin provides information on affected vehicles/transaxles produced prior to the modification date, as well as a general explanation of the gear modifications, part number changes, and information regarding interchangeability of internal transaxle components.

Shown is a chart listing all vehicles which may be affected by the automatic transaxle gear modifications:





DESCRIPTION

For noise reduction, several gears used in six automatic transaxle models were changed in shape. To provide a general understanding of this gear modification, refer to the illustration.








PARTS INFORMATION

When performing internal transaxle service, order the new component part numbers listed for each transaxle model in the chart. Refer to Section 23 of the parts microfiche to verify the latest part numbers which are available. Part numbers for A/T components not listed in the chart remain unchanged.


INTERCHANGEABILITY INFORMATION

When replacing internal components on any of the six automatic transaxle models, follow the interchangeability guidelines shown below:

1. Replace drive gear set, idler gear, and driven gear as a set.

2. Replace the transfer shaft and differential drive gear as a set.
