DECIPHERING KM170 SERIES TRANSAXLES SERIAL NUMBER
The code on the KM170 Series Transaxle can help you determine what you're working on for parts ordering and is useful when purchasing cores.
The early transaxles used either a 10 digit (Type I) or nine digit (Type II) configuration. Figure 1 shows a Type I code located on top of the case, behind the cooler fittings.
There are 3 digits that are assumed because they never change. These digits are "KM 1". Adding this to the original number gives you "KM1751AQM5".
EARLY TYPE I CODE BREAKDOWN
THE EARLY TYPE II CODE was used on some 4spd. units and normally has 9 digits. An example of a Type II code is shown. As with the Type I code, the first three digits are assumed as "KM 1". The first five digits are used in the same way as Type I.
Beginning with the 1990 models, the KM170 Series Transaxles were given new coding. You will find the late code on the top of the case, or below the manual shaft. Figure 2 shows you an example of the new coding.
The new code uses 10 digits. The first digit is assumed as "F" and the third digit is assumed as "A". Any letters before the first "4" are removed ("3" if it's a three speed). This gives you "F4A22 MPA1" (The sixth digit is missing in this case).
