Shifts 1-2-3-Neutral

The KM Series four speed transaxles have an end clutch, which is applied in third and fourth gear. When the end clutch does not apply, the transaxle neutrals on the 3-4 shift. The following procedures should be performed to diagnose the end clutch.

[Step 1]
Install a pressure gauge on the end clutch tap (figures 1 and 2).

[Step 2]
With the transaxle in third gear, end clutch pressure should be 118-128 psi (87-97 psi for 1985-86 Galant).

[Step 3]
If the pressure at the end clutch is low, the problem is usually caused by a leak in the end clutch piston seals, sealing ring or drum seal (figure 3).

[Step 4]
If there is no pressure at the end clutch, the problem is usually caused by a stuck end clutch valve or missing valve body to case feed pipe (figure 4).
