Operation CHARM: Car repair manuals for everyone.

Outside Vehicle Deployment Procedure

NOTE: Some procedures specified in this bulletin require the use of the Service Manual.

1. Disconnect the negative (-) and positive (+) battery cables from the vehicle's battery. Remove the battery from the vehicle.

WARNING: Wait at least 30 seconds after disconnecting the negative (-) battery cable before proceeding. The SRS system is designed to retain enough voltage to deploy the air bag for a short time even after the battery has been disconnected. Serious injury can result from unintended air bag deployment if work is done on the SRS system immediately after the battery is disconnected.

2. Remove the air bag module (Figure 1) from the vehicle. Refer to the appropriate service manual for air bag module removal procedures.

3. Connect two wires each at least 20 feet long to the two leads of a SRS AIR BAG ADAPTER HARNESS B (MB628919 - available from your facing PDC) and cover the connections with insulation tape. At the other end, temporarily connect the wires to each other (short circuit). This short circuiting will help prevent sudden unexpected deployment of the air bag module due to static electricity build-up. This adapter will be used to "trigger" the deployment of the air bag module.

4. Wrap 2 (two) 3 foot long heavy wires around the air bag module mounting studs and use nuts to secure the wires. These wires will be used to secure the air bag module to an old tire (Figure 3).

Figure 4:

5. Connect the adapter harness to the air bag module. Place the air bag module in the center of a mounted used tire.

6. Using the heavy wires, secure the air bag module to the mounted used tire (Figure 4).

NOTE: Make certain the air bag module is centered within the used tire.

7. Place the tire-air-bag-module assembly on the ground, with the module facing upwards (Figure 4).

NOTE: The adapter harness needs approximately 1 foot of slack when placed under the tire. If not, the adapter harness may be damaged by the reaction created during deployment.

Figure 5:

8. Stack 3 additional unmounted used tires on top of the tire to which the air bag module has been attached to (Figure 5).

Figure 6:

9. At an upwind location, as far away from the air bag module as possible, disconnect the two short-circuded wires. To deploy the module, connect the two wires to the two terminals of the battery which was removed from the vehicle (Figure 6).

WARNING:
1. Before deployment, carefully check that no one is nearby.
2. After deployment the air bag module's deployment inflator will be quite hot. Allow the module to cool for at least 30 minutes.
3. Although not poisonous, do not inhale the gases.
4. If the air bag module fails to deploy when the procedures are followed, do not go near the module. Contact your regional Tech Line at 1-800-446-6064 for instructions.
