SUBJECT:
RIVET NUT TOOL FOR DECK RACK INSTALLATION
PURPOSE
Deck rack installation on the 1989 Galant Base and LS models, and the 1989 Mirage 4 door sedan calls for a rivet nut ("rivnut") to be attached to the vehicle body. Although the rivet nut can be installed using wrenches, bolts and nuts, there are commercially available tools designed for this purpose. These tools can greatly speed up your work and provide a more uniform nut collapse. They also eliminate the possibility of marring the body with a slipped wrench.
A typical rivet nut tool is shown. They are available usually through your local tool supply house or hardware store, and some automotive tool vendors may also be able to supply you with one. When purchasing or ordering the tool, make sure you get a 10-32 mandrel as well. You have to have the exact mandrel to fit whatever size rivet nut you are using, and the deck rack is supplied with 10-32 rivet nuts. Kits are also available with several mandrels packed with the tool in a storage box.
