SUBJECT: REMOVAL OF STEERING COLUMN SHAFT COMPONENTS:

SERVICE MANUAL SUPPLEMENT

PURPOSE

This bulletin supplements disassembly procedures for the steering shaft assembly after its removal from vehicle. As a reference to this bulletin, please insert the TSB Revision number in the box at the bottom of page 37-18 (1990 Eclipse Service Manual) and page 37A-28 (1989/90/91 Integrated Galant Service Manual).

DESCRIPTION

When removing the boot, cover, and bearing from the steering shaft assembly, use the following procedure:

1. To remove the boot, apply a thick coat of multi-purpose grease to its internal surface and to the external surface of the shaft joint. Slide the boot over the joint in the direction of the arrows (Figure 1).

2. Using hand pressure, unseat the two-piece bearing from the center of the steering cover. Remove bearing in the direction of the arrows (Figure 2).

3. Remove the cover by applying a thick coat of multi-purpose grease to its center (rubber) portion in contact with the steering shaft. Slide the cover over the shaft joint in the direction of the arrows (Figure 3).


4. Assemble in reverse order, with the exception of the bearing. Assembly of the bearing is shown on page 37-20, step 4, of the 1990 and 1991 Eclipse Service Manuals, Volume 1, and page 37A-30, step 4, of the Integrated 1989-90-91 Galant Service Manual, Volume 1.
