A/T - Low-Reverse End Play Specification Changed
89mitsubishi05SUBJECT: CHANGE OF LOW-REVERSE END PLAY SPECIFICATION ON KM175-5 AND KM177 TRANSAXLES
NO: TSB-89-21-009
DATE: APRIL, 1989
MODEL: SIGMA V6
TSB REVISION: 89-21-009
PURPOSE To improve automatic transmission shift quality when going from neutral to reverse, MMC has decreased the low/reverse brake end play specification value. This took effect in production on 9/19/88 and is retroactive for all 1989 Galants and 1989 Sigma V6s.
On KM175-5 and KM177 equipped vehicles built after 9/19/88, use the new specification during repairs. Also use the new specification if you are overhauling the low/reverse brake assembly on a KM175-5 or KM177-equipped vehicle built before 9/19/88. To assist you in achieving this decreased value, two new thicker pressure plates are available.
As a reference to this bulletin, please make the changes shown and write TSB number 89-21-009 in the TSB Revision box at the bottom of the pages listed.

Location of the low/reverse brake pressure plate is shown:
DESCRIPTION OF CHANGE As of 9/19/88, on the KM175-5 and KM177 the end play of the low/reverse brake was decreased to improve the N to R shift.
Low/Reverse Brake End Play*
Old Specification: 1.2 - 1.4 mm (0.047 - 0.055 in.) (Prior to 9/19/88)
New Specification: 1.0 - 1.2 mm (0.039 - 0.047 in.) (After 9/19/88) (Same as on Eclipse)
On 1989 Galant and 1989 Sigma V6 built prior to the production change, use the new value if you are already repairing the low/reverse brake. To assist in doing this, two thicker selective pressure plates are available. Depending on your measurements, use the appropriate one to attain the correct end play.
