TIMING BELT NOISE ON GALANT, VAN/WAGON, TRUCK

FIGURE 1:

PURPOSE

In October, 1988 the timing belt on 1989 SOHC Galants, Van/Wagons and Trucks was changed in an effort to reduce noise. At the same time the oil pump drive sprocket was given a taper along the belt contact area. These items are now available for use on older vehicles. The differences between the old and new pulleys are shown below in figure 1. Note that the new pulley has a "T" stamped near the center. There are no identifying marks to differentiate between the old and new belts other than part numbers.

Should you encounter a customer complaint of timing belt noise on one of these vehicles, the first thing you should do is adjust the timing belt already on the car. If this does not correct the condition, installing a new style timing belt and oil pump drive sprocket as a set may help. Use the chart in figure 2 to obtain the correct belt and sprocket.
