PRECIS REAR HUB INSTALLATION
PURPOSE
This bulletin is issued as a reminder of the proper procedures to be followed when installing the rear hub/brake drum on a Precis. The proper preload adjustment procedure will improve the life of the wheel bearings and eliminate bearing looseness that leads to tire tread cupping.
REAR HUB INSTALLATION POINTS
Before installing the hub, note the following points:
Make sure that the bearings are in good condition. Inspect the races and rollers for galling, flaking, pitting, discoloration, etc.
Make sure that all old grease has been cleaned from the bearings, the hub, the spindle, and individual parts.
Make sure that the new grease is of the proper specification:
Multipurpose grease SAE J310A, NLGI grade #2
Make sure that you have properly packed the wheel bearings and hub with grease.
Always use a new split pin (cotter pin).
If the rear hub was removed only to inspect the rear brakes, be sure to clean the grease off of the spindle (brake dust always falls on the spindle and gets caught in the grease), and inspect the rear hub seal before re-installation.
Installing the hub
1. Install the inner wheel bearing (packed with grease) into the inside hub and install the inner hub seal. Coat the lip of the hub seal with grease.
2. Install the rear hub assembly onto the spindle.
3. Insert the outer bearing and washer onto the spindle and thread the nut on by hand.
4. While rotating the hub by hand, tighten the nut to 20 N-m (15 ft.lb.) then loosen to 0 N-m (0 ft.lb.).
5. Again while rotating the hub by hand, tighten the nut to 5 N-m (4 ft.lb.).
6. Install the lock cap and a new split pin.
7. If the lock cap will not line up with the spindle hole in any position, the nut may be unscrewed a maximum of 15 degrees until a hole lines up.
8. Fill the grease cap half full with grease and install.
