A/T - Gear Selector Binding

90mitsubishi13 SURJECT:
GEAR SELECTOR BINDING
NO. TSB-90-23-013

DATE December, 1990

MODEL 1986 - 1989 Precis
PURPOSE

If the gear selector binds or is hard to move on a 1986 - 89 Precis equipped with an automatic transmission, the shift cable may have become corroded. This bulletin presents corrective action for the condition.

CABLE GROUNDS:

DESCRIPTION

Corrosion in the Precis automatic transmission shift cable may have been caused by a poor ground for the battery negative (-) cable. Corrosion at the point where the battery cable grounds to the bell housing, or corrosion of the battery cable itself, can cause high resistance in the ground circuit. This causes the shift cable to act as an alternate ground path. The resulting heat which is generated may cause the plastic inner jacket of the shift cable to soften, and it sticks to the cable, causing the cable to bind.
CHECKING PROCEDURE

1. Inspect the ground cable connection at the battery negative (-) cable. Clean or replace as necessary.

2. Inspect the ground cable connection at the bell housing for corrosion. If corrosion is found, clean or replace the cable and connections as necessary.

3. Inspect the upper radiator hose and clamp above the bell housing connection for coolant leakage onto the battery cable. Repair as necessary.

4. With the battery cables installed, use a voltmeter as shown, connect the positive (+) to the starter motor case and the negative lead to the negative post of the battery.

NOTE: The negative (-) voltmeter lead must be connected directly to the battery and not to the negative cable connector.

5. Set the Voltmeter to a range that reads in tenths of a volt.

6. Crank the engine while reading the Voltmeter. The voltage should be less than 0.2 Volts. If the reading is higher than 0.2 Volts, check the ground cable and its connections. Repair as necessary.
