This bulletin explains a difference that may be found in the design of the intermediate gear of the
1989 Precis manual transmission.
DESCRIPTION
Prior to May 12, 1987, the transmission intermediate gear had a noise quieting subgear supported by three springs which fitted into three holes in the intermediate gear.
After May 12, 1987, the springs and sub gear were eliminated, and the intermediate gear contained only two holes.

43218-21000 - Gear, Intermediate
43291-21000 - Spring
43219-21000 - Sub Gear
INTERCHANGEABILITY
These gears are interchangeable. There are four possibilities.
Figure 1:
1. The old-style gear (with three holes and springs) is replaced by a new-style gear (see Figure 1).
Action: Install the new-style gear. Discard the springs and sub gear.
2. The new-style gear (2 holes, no springs) is replaced with an old gear.
Action: Install the old-style gear. No need to install the springs and sub gear, even though they could be used if desired.
3. An old-style gear is replaced with an old-style gear.
Action: Install the replacement gear, and reinstall the springs and sub gear.
4. A new-style gear is replaced with a new-style gear.
Action: Install the new gear.
PARTS
The old-style gear and the new-style gear have the same part number. The old-style gear has three holes for springs, the new-style gear has only two holes.
