Powertrain Management: Service Precautions

Catalytic Converter Damage
Operation of any type--including idling--should be avoided if engine misfiring occurs.
- Under this condition the exhaust system will operate at abnormally high temperatures, which may damage the catalyst or underbody parts.

Alteration or deterioration of ignition or fuel system, or any type of operating condition which results in engine misfiring must be corrected to avoid overheating the catalytic converter.

Proper maintenance and tune up according to manufacturer's specifications should be made to correct the conditions as soon as possible.

Unauthorized Modifications
Never perform unauthorized modifications of any electrical device or wiring.
- Such modifications might lead to vehicle malfunction, over capacity or short circuit that could result in a fire in the vehicle.

Battery Disconnection
Before disconnecting the negative battery cable be sure the ignition switch and the lighting switch are in the OFF position.
- Failure to do so could result in damage to semiconductor parts.

Prior to vehicle service always disconnect the negative terminal from the battery.

After Repairs
After completing repairs on the MFI system--when the negative battery terminal has been disconnected--warm up the engine and allow it to idle for approximately five minutes under the conditions described below, in order to stabilize engine control conditions, and then check to be sure idling is satisfactory.
- Coolant Temperature - 85-95° C (185-203° F)
- Lights, electric fans and all accessories - OFF
- Transaxle - in Neutral (Automatic in N or P)
- Steering Wheel - Centered
