Deployment Outside the Vehicle

Before scrapping a vehicle equipped with an air bag system, or prior to disposing of an air bag module, the module must be deployed. If vehicle is to be scrapped, deploy air bag(s) inside vehicle. If vehicle is to continue in service, air bags must be removed and deployed outside vehicle.
1. Disconnect and remove battery from vehicle. Wait at least 60 seconds after disconnection before performing any further steps. SRS is designed to retain enough deployment voltage for a short time even after battery has been disconnected.
2. Remove air bag module as described in Air Bag Control Module.
3. Connect two 20 ft. long wires to the two leads of SRS drivers air bag adapter harness "B tool No. MB628919, or equivalent, or passengers air bag adapter harness "A" tool No.MB686560, or equivalent, and cover connections with tape. Other ends of two wires should be connected to each other to prevent unexpected deployment.
4. Place air bag module with pad cover facing upward in a flat, spacious area at least 20 feet away from any people, animals, equipment or other objects.
5. Connect adapter harness "B" to air bag module connector.
6. Install four nuts and bolts on rear side of module, then tie with thick wire.
7. Pass adapter harness "B" under a discarded tire and wheel assembly, then connect to air bag module.

8. Position air bag module on wheel and tire assembly, then secure with wires attached to bolt holes. Ensure module is facing upward, Fig. 44. Leave some space below wheel for deployment wires.
9. Place three tires without rims on top of tire and wheel assembly with air bag module attached.
a. Do not perform deployment outside if a strong wind is blowing. Even in a slight breeze, the air bag should be deployed downwind from battery.
b. Ensure no people, animals, equipment or objects are nearby. Module will jump upward several feet into the air.

10. From as far away as possible, in a shielded position, disconnect two connected wires from each other and connect them to a fully charged 12 volt battery, Fig. 45.
11. Inflator will be quite hot immediately after deployment. Wait 30 minutes to allow air bag to cool.
12. Do not inhale gas from air bag.
13. Dispose of air bag as outlined under "Deployed Air Bag Module Disposal".
