Ignition Lock: Service and Repair

Refer to Technician Safety Information for Air Bag Arming and Disarming.

1. Remove ignition switch or lock cylinder in numbered sequence as shown, Fig. 10, noting the following:
a. Remove steering wheel as outlined under Steering Wheel.

b. To remove clockspring connector from air bag module, force lock outward and pry it with a suitable screwdriver as shown, Fig. 11. Ensure no excessive force is applied when connector is removed. The removed air bag module should be stored in a clean, dry, flat place with pad cover facing up.

c. Remove upper and lower steering column cover screws and covers, ensuring not to break cover grippers, Fig. 12.
d. Insert ignition key into ignition lock cylinder and turn to Acc position.

e. Press down lockpin using a suitable Phillips head screwdriver to remove lock cylinder, Fig. 13.
2. Reverse numbered sequence as shown, Fig. 10 to assemble, noting the following:
a. Line up "Neutral" mark of clockspring with mating mark to center clockspring. If clockspring is not centered, problems such as intermediate failure of steering wheel to turn or broken ribbon cable in clockspring could occur. As a result, they might hinder proper operation of SRS, resulting in serious injury.
